I saw a Montego turbo at Crail.

The make up reg read "turbo shed"

Was quite quick, but boy it was ugly

Bit harsh with the top 20! I've driven every one of them except the MG 1100/1300 and whilst there were some right clunkers a few of them were surprisingly tidy drives in their day,

1. Austin Allegro 0.05 per cent remaining - comfy but dull until the hydrogas suspension went phut at which point handling became 'unusual'!
2. Austin Montego 0.05 per cent remaining - The MG turbo went too fast for it's chassis and the windscreen which fell out because of monumental rust!
3. Austin Princess 0.05 per cent remaining - weird suspension, weird car
4. Hillman Avenger 0.06 per cent remaining - Neat and tidy handling for a saloon, not exciting but not bad. The Tiger was a 8.5 sec/60 hoot
5. Vauxhall Viva 0.07 per cent remaining - Ok and they did a GT complete with black bonnet
6. Morris Marina 0.08 per cent remaining - DANGEROUS had the unusual trait of being a rear wheel drive with the most epic understeer, it just wouldn't!
7. Austin Maxi 0.08 per cent remaining - Christ what to say? it was roomy?
8. Morris Ital 0.1 per cent remaining - Updated Marina deserves to rot!
9. Rover SD1 0.1 per cent remaining - OK now this was a great car very badly built from scrap steel an melted bin liners! A Vitesse was the first car I ever saw 130 mph in.
10. Vauxhall VX-series 0.1 per cent remaining - wobbly and forgetable old mans motor.
11. Austin Metro 0.1 per cent remaining - the mini it aint but actually drove well, just embaressing to be in.
12. Ford Cortina 0.1 per cent remaining - Loved the 'Tinas so tunableand chuckable. My MK2 saw a lot of 'action'
13. MG 1100/1300 0.1 per cent remaining - never had the pleasure
14. Austin Maestro 0.2 per cent remaining - As per Montego but with the boot cut off
15. Vauxhall Chevette 0.2 per cent remaining - sort of OK in a granddads car way, the HS was a boy racer special
16. Austin Ambassador 0.2 per cent remaining - What were they thinking? drove like a barge.
17. Hillman Imp 0.2 per cent remaining - My first car and introduction to the art of the blown head gasket, roller skate drive, zero reliability!
18. Rover 200 0.3 per cent remaining - Rebadged Honda, worthy but dull
19. Triumph Acclaim 0.4 per cent remaining - As above
20. Ford Sierra 0.4 per cent remaining - Great cars, the ride/handling and gear change were sweet and easy to exploit. Epic rust. Hot versions now a fortune!

I'm surprised but pleased the Stag is surviving so well, it being the classic I sold to buy the Zed :D Financial suicide! My Stag has since doubled in value and the Zed halved, oh well at least I get home after a drive to the coast

As for the Z4 I'd guess a relatively high % will survive, the shell seems to suffer zero rust and engines are tough, the killer may be the availability and cost of modules, sensors, auto lights blah blah and injection systems etc, potentially all stacking up to make them uneconomic to repair? If I got in to an early Z4 right now I'd go for the meanest Flimper spec' I could find to avoid future hassle.

The only one I would have wanted in there was a Sierra...even then only a Cosworth. Other than that, I'll push the button on the crusher to help...

My parents had a brown 2.0 litre Austin Princess with brown velour interior, it was brilliant ! It even had an armrest that could be pulled out in the middle of the back seat. I miss that car. Sadly, we didn't have it for long as it started to rust to pieces after only a couple of years .

Despite being German my father was such an anglophile that we also had a Morris Marina in bright red when I was very young, which for some reason had a full P.A. system in it. I remember being in the car surrounded by people ( no idea why ) and my dad using the P.A. system to clear a path for the car. Another notable feature was the fact that it was a coupe, and as such my mum practiced for a whole afternoon wtih me winding down the windows and climbing out the back in case of a crash ! I was probably about 4/5 at the time. Again the car rusted into nothingness.

Brown with brown velour interior, seriously retro combination also seen in Alfa's and even Maserati's of the era

PS sorry I was a bit rude about them

Thanks for the pics, really brings back memories :).

My grandmother also owned an Audi 100 in orange with green leather, in the same(ish) era , a colour combo she specially asked for. We inherited the car from her and again had it for a couple of years.

I'm going to have nightmares tonight! Grew up working in a small garage in the early 80's. used to weld them up for a living. It certainly was a full time occupation with some of the above.... So glad when I moved to classics :)

I've owned 4 out of the first list :D

Austin Allegro - Beige with a square steering Wheel

Austin Princess - BRG with beige velour int

Austin Metro - Red, normal int

Various Ford Cortina's mk 4 & 5's , Brown, Silver and Red

They were all my Winter runners, never missed a beat !

A mate at work currently owns 4 from the first list!

EDIT : Make that 5 - he says he's got a Rover 200 "at the back of the shed"!

Dad was a Marina & Ital Company Car fan for years before he took delivery of a 1.3L Cavalier... must have damaged me mentally as never owned a UK car, just:

1 Italian (first car)
4 Japanese
7 German cars.... oooh and a 50/50 share in a Russian Muscovitch

Owned many classic cars but non on the first list (as classics, owned some when they were current though)

Still own a stag and a magnificent beast it is too, just had dreaded hgf and had to buy replacement engine, took 4 weeks to swap it out.

:driving:

Happy days

god i think i have owned most of them at one time or another, and then i bought a datsun sunny -- they just worked .....
