Toothache woes

I have had problems in the recent past with a persistent abscess which sounds like your problem otherwise antibiotics wouldn't have been prescribed. Normal amoxicillin wouldn't touch it so I had something else which eventually worked. In the meantime the pain was so bad that I had to visit A&E to get some horse strength painkillers. Codeine did the job. Just.

Cheers bluespit, I was the same for many years in that I was getting regular abscesses on the front upper teeth as I have overly large root canals which are more suseptible, I ended up having an op which was to remove the upper gum bone to expose the canals and then had them all cemented up, the bone was cemented back and gum stitched up, thankfully since then, some 20 years its all been fine.
