Never needing torx bits before other than the odd screwdriver type for remeoving speakers and the odd door card what would you recomend buying?
Are they like spanners and socket sets where you buy a set and only use the 10, 13, 17 and the rest gather dust. If so did you pay a little more for good quality single bits?
I know may sizes will depend on what I'm working on.

Think of torx bits like allen keys (hex keys). The more you pay, the better the quality. Like with allen keys, you don't want them rounding off inside the fixing, as it becomes a real headache. On BMWs there are quite a few different sizes needed for different things, so a good quality set is worth paying for IMO.
I have a set with 1/4" and 3/8" drive adapters to fit normal socket heads. Very useful. I also have a set with 'long' and 'short' shafts, which can also be useful.

I've had various sets over the years, the ones that work well are a Worx set like Allen keys I picked up a couple of years ago, and the socket bits in my Halfords Professional Socket Set kit (although I did break a T25 in that set trying to undo something totally rusted solid.) I'd recommend either, but the worx keys are lovely to use and one end is made such they work at an angle too.

I've just bought all of the Halfords singles, mostly in 3/8 drive. So T20 to T55, however I've never used the T27 (I think it might be a French thing) so skip that and if you honestly never use every size spanner[1], don't bother with T55 (or anything bigger) as you're probably not doing those sorts of jobs.

[1] My early collections of sockets and spanners were only the "common" sizes and that soon proved to be a mistake the more jobs (car and otherwise) I did. 11, 12, 14, 15, 22 all come out, if only very occasionally, 16 & 18 are what BMW use instead of 17 & 19 (it's a DIN Vs ISO thing) and 21 and 24 are standard suspension. The only sizes that are almost unheard of and I don't think I've ever used are 20 & 23 (one of those I don't think I've even got.)

The halfords advanced and professional kits are really useful. Plus whenever you break something with the advanced kits, they replace them free of charge and no questions asked, its their lifetime guarantee. this is super useful, their stuff is made super well too, the only thing i broke was a t30, i hammered it into a rounded allen key to free it, got the replacement in 4 days.

All I really want to do atm will be service and fit new waterpump, ccv and both disa's, I just want to prevent problems in the future, the cars my daily so reliability is important.
As for before the Z I worked on my Eunos, coilovers, cambelt and waterpump and a few other jobs but again most sockets and spanners were between 10 and 22, with the odd larger socket for the harmonic ballencer etc.
As suggested I'll buy the halfords torx bits and sockets, I have an advanced socket set as as has been mentioned they come with a good warrenty and seem pretty much unbreakable.
