[ref]terryo[/ref], is that some card wedged between the battery and the metal holder? I only ask because I did exactly that when I bought a Bosch battery to replace the BMW one and they are a slightly different size 
Edit: I should have answered the question, too! In mine there is the empty space you have and I still have the original toolkit, which is as you describe - a black pouch with red trim (iirc) in the smaller space.

the cardboard is just the warranty card for the battery. its not a spacer
getting a tool lit from the UK to me in Oz will probably cost silly money in post, but thanks for the thought
yes, i guess an amp is possible. mine has no "spare" wiring there but maybe that was a factory thing as they are US built. most of the german BMW's i've had are wired for everything

My E89 has a "kit". Wrapped in a pouch is a tow hook eyelet which I assume screws into the bumper once the plug is removed ... handy if you put your car in the ditch often. 1 terribly clumsy cheap looking stubby Philips screwdriver - and a spot where I'm missing the clumsy cheap stubby common screwdriver :? I stuffed a tire plug kit in the same spot.
This was in my E85 when I got it (minus the lock nut key). enzed is right - neither of my E86s had the hex key. 
To be fair there is so little in it you aren't missing much if you don't have it, although you do want to have the wheel bolt key and the towing eye (for when the water pump dies). :roll:
