Too soon to trade?

I'm going to my local dealer to test drive the new Z4 tomorrow and if I like it, I'll be putting mine up for sale, but I've been thinking - should I actually buy one? I know it's only been out for a year, but how long would it be until they release a facelift? I love the styling of the new zed, but I get the impression that it might look dated quite quickly. Then again I thought that about the new TT when that came out but it still look alright.

It's not that cheap either... not bad, but not a bargain. Will it decrease in value significantly over the next year or so?

Thoughts would be appreciated!

i'm sure they will bring a face lift out at some point, at that point ye it will loose value

It'll either lose lots of value, or shed loads of value.

There will be a facelift to make it look older and lose value more too.

I'd just buy an early used 35i one if you like them.

why not a Z4M Coupe ? cheaper and far better. would be my choice without hesitation.

I tried 30i today, and new model is so refined. I love it. :D See my recent post. All cars lose value, but roadster should lose value slower than saloon/coupe.

You loose $12,000 just registering it. Lease it and your commitment is short and you can decide later to turn it in or not.

I've bought 5 brand new cars in the past, and lost a shed load of money on every single one - thats just the way it is. Personally I've got the new car thing out of my system and wouldn't buy another new, If its this car which you really want I'd look for a demonstrator or nearly new.

But thats me - there is no logic to buying cars, if you want a brand new one you will somehow convince yourself that its the sensible option!!!!

Thanks for all the comments. I test drove one on Saturday - what a nice car! It feels like a whole new car rather than a 'new version' of the old car. The quality is incredible. I think the best option would be to wait until next year when hopefully it will have come down in price a bit more (maybe by about 5k? *fingers crossed*) and by that point there may even be a facelift out which as Taz said will drop the value a bit more.

Sounds weird, but the most impressive thing about it was the seats - they are the most comfy seats I've ever sat on!

Tbh i wouldn't buy one... There not exactly getting rated in any review's i've seen.

Don't think there as much as a driver's car s as the old z4...It got destroyed in a recent reivew vs boxter and the like

You gotta realise the old z4 is an incredible handling car,Look at 5th gear Tiff Needle test drives it back to back round the track with a 2.7 Boxster..beat it by around a 1 second.,Some people say the boxster is one of the best handling and finest handling car's in the world.

It's become to me more of a SLK kinda thing...Sure a metal folding roof look's cool. But the extra weigth?

It wasn't exactly a ligth 2 seater at not far off 1.4 tons...

Z4M!...future classic ,Wasn't a massive seller,first of it's kind (first z4 M)Last of the straigth Six M engined car's..I'd go for one over a new z4 deffo.

I switched and so glad I did!

Fantastic car! They could face lift it tomorrow and I'd still keep mine! Actually, they have with the M kit, and to be honest I think it's for the worse!

ryukin, Glad you liked it. Its weird but when I had the E85 I loved it to bits and thought it was the best car for me at that time. I now think exactly the same of the E89 and really appreciate how it has 'evolved' over the E85.

Yeah, I'm really pleased I tried it out. It's made me certain that it's the car I want. The one I lookd at was £32k - hoping to pick one up with similar spec in a year or so for around £25k (more in my price range then!)

Local car dealer not far from me has this up for sale. Spec is quite basic though (doesn't have sport seats):

Think your on the right track wait a bit maybe even till they hit 3 Warranty over you will get a bargain as i like to think i did E85 just over 3 high spec and only 11.5k on the clock and a minter £17.5k :D

Re the new Z4 its starting to grow on me saw one when out Sat morning in Met Grey on 19s looked superb from the front but still cant get my head around the back end was the same with the E85 loved the whole car but felt the front end looked a bit to happy but grew on me in the end (still looks a bit smiley) so may think about the new Z in a few years would make a nice 50th prezzie to myself.

The seats as you say are very comfy

@ +49
All the reviews I have read so far, and that's a fair few have praised the E89, yes the handling is not as precise as the Boxter, but neither was the previous incarnation and tbh this is not what BMW had in mind for the E89 and to imply its not worth owning is plainly madness, have you driven one yet?

@ ryukin
BMW, like most car manufacturers will update the design (facelift) after three years with a new model in six, so another two years to go, even then used car prices will hardy change as this will be new car, except if you bought new just before the facelift launch so I wouldn't worry about it now.

One point I would make. is that of the new M Sport, I cannot believe that they want £3k over the standard car, at least with the S you get more power and torque

Z4 Beemer, that's a nice car. I think if I'm going to do it (because it's not going to be a cheap purchase) then I'll be getting one with all the features I want. The one I was looking at was this: http://www.sytnercoventrybmw.co.uk/usedbmw/view_model.html?dolnDealerID=16307&currentCh=WBALM52040E159521

Looks stunning and top spec.

That does indeed look like a pretty high spec (similar to mine actually :D ) and the mileage and price makes it look quite desirable. That must be around 5-6K off the cost from new?
