Too many previous owners?

Hi

I've recently been looking a Z4MC for sale not far from me - test drove it the weekend before last and loved it . There were no obvious faults/issues when I drove it and the previous owner seems to have treated it very well. It has full BMW service history, had its Inspection II done 100 miles ago, tyres have good tread etc.

The car is a 57 plate and has done 35k miles, however it's had 5 owners - is that a reason to be put off or do these cars change hands a fair bit? Dealer didn't seem to think it was an issue but he would say that....

Any opinions?

Yes usually a second or third car for most, weekends or special occasions, low milage, and usually have a few owners

Hi,

Personally condition is everything when it come to used cars, followed by mileage for the year.

Cars like the Z tend to be bought as toys, kept for a summer or 2, or until the longing to own a sports car has been satisfied (I know this is not true of most folks on here :wink: ), then sold on.

Do all the normal checks and if everything else rings true, I would'nt give the number of previous owners a thought.

my 2004 Z only done 54,000 miles when i bought it and it had 8 previous owners.
was a bit worried but all was good.

As long as it is reflected in the price ...

It would not be for me, but everyone has a different view on that.

It's on for £16,750 (ruby black and champagne leather), spec is as follows:
- Bluetooth prep.
- Cruise control
- Professional Navigation
- Professional hi-fi
- Heated seats
- Parking sensors

Does the price seem reasonable?

Mine has had 5 previous owners, The guy I had it of had owned it for 2 years before he sold it to me so to me that meant car was good, I think a lot of people buy these cars as a everyday cars then find out they are quite hard work to live with every day, They are great as a weekend car but every day would get a bit tyre some imo and that's why I think they have usually had a few owners, people buy them then think they are a bit extreme and sell on after 6 months or so. Which is what I love about mine they are so special and always bring a smile to your face, They are built to go fast and comfort comes second, I would say as long as he has not owned for only a week or so and everything checks out ok buy it

yep, I think we have seen at least 3 people on here over the past year or so that have bought and sold a Z4M within 6 - 12 months of ownership - I guess some didn't do their maths before purchasing

Seems a a lot - Perhaps one was the Dealer - is it an Aberdeen car - might explain it . I would have about 3-4 would be the average on a 6-7 year old car.

Price sounds good.

Wouldn't worry about previous owners to be honest. Condition and history matter.

If having a one owner car matters to you, that's fair enough. But personally I don't see the attraction.

I walk to work, so it would be a weekend car (apart from the odd weekday journey).

As others have said, the condition and history is more important than owners to me.

Yep, it's champagne leather (I checked the spec) - the pics don't help either as they make it look a bit yellow.

That amount of owners would bother me personally ....... I want to buy a car that's been owned by as little amount of people for as long as possible ....

I would rather have a car that had been driven by 5 careful owners than 1 boy racer. And you'll know from a test drive just how it's been driven.

I bought mine with 4 previous owners on 6 year old car. Digging deeper I found two owners were co-workers, one was the dealer and my seller was moving abroad. It shouldn't automatically reflect badly on the car.

I'm the 5th owner of my car. Sometimes the number of owners doesn't tell the whole story. I've owned the car for 6 months (and don't plan on selling anytime soon), the previous owned had it for 18 months and the one before that 3 years.

My car feels like new and has clearly been loved and well looked after (and continues to be). The number of owners isn't always indicative of the car's condition.

As said, some people own these cars for 6 months to a year and sell with no reflection of the car's condition, just because life gets in the way, kids, house purchase life change.


///M's are often a 2nd/3rd car and not a necessity. When life changes they are often the first thing to go.

If the car has a solid history and appears to be well looked after and in decent condition, go for it, enjoy the car.

Ha.. my office looks down onto their yard, spotted it a few weeks ago sitting there

Good luck. I'd aim for nearer £15.5k personally. See what condition it's in. It's likely to need front brakes at that mileage, or very soon, so factor in £400 for that.
