What if the person that walks through the door in that scenario is a family member? I'm sure there must've been adrenaline fuelled incidents like this. What if you miss the intruder and you fire through a thin stud wall towards other bedrooms?

mmm, dangerous move... you must admit that if YOU had someone in a position where you had a gun to their head there is no way they would get away with reaching for a gun without you shooting them first... don't get me wrong, I am glad she got one over him, but IMHO she was just lucky the guy was an amateur.

i agree, very dangerous and she was VERY lucky. Shen also had the element of surprise working for her. I'm sure he thought she was reaching for the money in her pocket, not a gun.

This is where training comes into play! Using a shotgun also limits the amount of damage past the "intended" target. Granted it will still be a mess, but I am willing to clean up a mess if my family and I are safe and sound. And before the naysayers jump on board, let me point out that the statistics of a person living through a home invasion around this area are close to nil, whether armed or not :wink:

I agree with what 20 ducks said. Part of the reason I've held off I think, is that for one...would I really wake up and be able to use a gun if needed? but two, it's going to be dark, and I have thin walls...chances are if I shot and missed the bullet would go into a neighbors condo. I think I'll just keep the 3 knives (actual combat oriented knives) near the bed, with another 3 or 4 scattered around the house and go at em with knives. Until then I will get an alarm installed with should deter the basic intruders.

One of the principal disciplines in home defense is to lay low, no lights and wait. Most intrusions are grab and dash and not armed robbery. They want stealth, goods and run, not a confrontation. Besides, I have a home security system that will not only alert me of entry but will alert the bad guy(s) of the same.

If I were a burglar going into a house with a dog like that, I'd bring a dozen cats.
