TomTom Sends Data to Police!!!

And the maps produced by captain blackbeard after a particularly heavy night of rum rendered him half blind and unsure as to whether he was in the Bahamas or Bristol...

Worth pointing out that this was actually first reported by TomTom themselves and they don't seem too happy about it...

It turns out the police have used traffic information that you have helped to create to place speed
cameras where the average speed is higher than the legally allowed speed limit. We did not
foresee in this type of usage. TomTom fully understands some of customers do not like this and
we will amend the licensing conditions to stop this type of usage in near future.

It's anonymous data and so doesn't have the same level of protection afforded under the data protection acts.

Well firstly, its only TomTom Live, and secondly, its hard to credit the creation of new camera spots. I'm pretty sure that ACPO guidance says that speed cameras and mobile devices can only be placed within a certain distance (3 miles I think) of a serious or fatal RTA and, despite the fact there are a large historical number of such historical events, their geography is actually relatively constrained. Its why you'll often find camera vans on quiet country roads but within spitting distance of a motorway or dual carriageway.

So there you go, bin your iPad, iPhone, Android phone and TomTom Live and you're home and dry LOL :driving:

Who cares...... :P

When I go to the suprermarket my purchasing activity is recorded (helps them stock the shelves with items that sell)
Go to central London and your movements are monitored by CCTV 300 plus times during a normal working day. Bit less for other principle cities.
Every time I use my credit/debit card my location and puchasing activity is recorded.
Mobile phones - cellular triangulation and your position can be monitored.

and so it goes on.

BUT it can have its uses - if someone accuses you of something and you were somewhere else look at all the data points you can access to prove your innocence.

BIG BROTHER RULES!

I only go 3G on the iPad in the US (I live a bit north of there), have as basic a phone as i could get for free, my iPod is an iPod only, not a gps and my GPS units are not communicable so I'm good...no paranoia here

I'm tired of Big Brother, look for me in the desert, the 3rd Airstream on the left after the big rock shaped like an alien.

I guess in the UK you are all accustomed to speed cameras, but they're very rare here in the US. They'll set up radar signs that display speeds but they don't hook them up to cameras, I think mostly due to the presumption of innocence laws. That sounds wayyyy too big brother to a typical American, I'd imagine. It does me.

That said, they do use red light cameras here in San Francisco but not speed cams.

Don't even bother driving your car if your that's worried, think of the data that's stored and could be used.

My bosses Jaguar XFR has one such device and the manual tells you it could be used in evidence. What does the E89 have I wonder
