To wait or not to wait...

Can I just say regarding only buying with a warranty, a warranty is issued though an insurance company, these companies are there to make a profit, that would suggest that you are more likely to buy a 35i/is and have more chances off spending less on repairs than on insurance premiums, granted there is always a lemon out there, plus you are more likely to live with a minor problem than taking it for repair, but I don’t think that all 35’s are money pits, so far I’ve been fortunate and not had anything major fail, I’m also pretty hands on and my son is a mechanic (so no extortionate labouer costs), but even so I don’t think a warranty is the be and ends all for the 35’s, just be aware of the potential costs involved and be prepared to put your hand in your pocket should anything go wrong, put money aside each month and chances are over 3 or 4 years you will be better off.

This

With a bit of awareness and understanding of issues you can read on this forum then nothing too serious or big to worry about.

Thanks for that Peter
That all sounds like my old jallopy with its current use should be ok for a few years yet?

I was fairly certain you were the fella to ask about the updated components

Consumables are Just a fact of life and my car has a very gentle life - summer use / dry garage and always warmed up gently!

Currently sitting at 14k at 5yrs old - I think it will last a while - unless the M40i itch / availability starts again!

I think you would be very unlucky to have many issues given it’s age, storage and use profile.

I’d start to worry in the 2030s based on your historical usage profile

Thanks very much for the advice all!
I would probably end up getting warranty/service plan as I'm not particularly mechanically minded
As a side question... has anyone had any experience with the previous gen 4 series convertibles? F33 440i/M4
In my eyes it wouldn't feel the same from a 'sporty' look and feel, but someone has suggested that I had a look.

*Edit* when I say sporty I guess I'm referring to how special the experience is and how it makes you feel when driving...

Please note when I looked into warranties on a 35is you couldn’t (easily) get a non bmw warranty on cars over 10 years old. BMW would cover it, at a price.

Pretty cars the 4 series convertibles but I suspect dynamically very different and not very ‘roadster’…I looked at a 435 XDrive grand coupe but that’s addressing a very different market.

I bought my first Z4 all those years ago because it was a two seater - I didn’t want a soft top saloon.

Although I’m no spring chicken, I haven’t changed my mind.

The 440 models all use the same B58 engine as the current 6 cylinder G29 Z4. These seem to be pretty good so far from what I have read.
M4 uses the S55 which has a reputation (deserved or not) for the crank hub coming loose and spinning. This, of course may have something to do with the way these cars tend to be driven and mapped for massive power

435 uses the N55 which seems to be slightly less prone to blowing turbos (only has one) than the N54 .

My N54 has had both turbos rebuilt and an HPFP all at less than 40k miles (before I got her) but it is a 2008 model so an early version.

Not really found much on people colour preference on the e89...
What is everyone's opinion on deep sea blue?

This car has just come up on used approved so will ofcourse come with the benefits of buying from a main dealer... And seems to be well priced in the current market!
I very much fancy an alpine White car but am starting to think realistically that I might need to go with something else.
Thoughts on Alpine White Vs Mineral pearl white?

Mineral white has an extra side to it in the sunshine, think it was an option at extra cost.

MartyB,

I declare a bias here, My previous E89 (3.0l) was Deep Sea Blue and I loved it.
If the same colour had been available when I bought my current car i would have bought the same colour. it’s the only car that on two occasions people have made positive  comments

If that car has the spec etc then go for it. It doesn‘t seem to be over priced nor have very high miles. Being main dealer you will get a proper warranty and the opportunity to renew after that first year.

[ref]MartyB[/ref], that blue one seems very reasonably priced for a main dealer. As Ron say full warranty and opportunity to extend. You also get an MOT check at 11 months + and it’s MOT excluding wear and tear items

The blue one looks like a steal compared to some others in the market.

I have Alpine white and love the colour, suits the e89, I have had a pearl white car previously and would have bought mineral white if one was available in budget / spec

Deep sea blue is a stunning colour, I don't think those photos quite do it justice. That price looks like a bargain for the mileage and spec - especially for a dealer.

It knocks some of the cars on auto trader into a cocked hat
The photos don’t show any evidence that the car has been messed about with.

A view from my local specialist dealer suggests that second hand prices will stay firm at least for the next 6 to 12 months

So that’s another year gone by

Waiting for perfection could be a long wait

You can always buy the perfect one if it comes up later

There are worse colours than DSB although I would prefer a light colour interior

There just aren’t that many 35i cars and most folks are hanging onto them as there’s precious little to replace them with without spending big money

I pondered for a long time re selling my 35is last year but couldn’t be 100% certain of being able to get a delivery of an M40i for the springtime.

This is the time of year when people start to get the inclination for an open top two seater and why prices start to rise!

I don't think there is a colour that doesn't suit the E89 (apart from yellow).
If I were buying another I would look at price, history, mileage and spec rather than colour (but not yellow).

Good point - Might not be the case this year though with rising domestic fuel, council tax, petrol, national insurance, interest rates.
Not to mention the increasing rise in EV take up..... I have a lot of rental property and not one single person in any of them can afford a car any longer and they all work!
Very very hard time now for a lot of people in the UK

With the exception of your good self I think most people who were looking at profiteering on the 35 prices have off loaded their cars now.

I suspect that most people who now have a 35 are in keeper mode, which of course creates a perceived shortage.

Maybe an AMG SLK is the other option to a 35?

I wasn’t profiteering by any stretch of the imagination - minimising the losses is more appropriate!

Availability of 35is seems to be pretty constant, for the last year there have always been around 6/7/8 on Autotrader, mostly low mileage.

With the 35i, there always seems to be a good 20+ for sale. A lot of the 35i are becoming high(er) mileage and getting down to the prices where people will buy them and not look after them, so I can see numbers starting to decline over the next few years.
