To SORN or not to SORN!

tomorrow id the day to tax the car, do i Sorn it for a couple of months or will i want to drive it, desicions desicions :? :? :?
 
I garaged mine for last years frozen Dec-Feb period and just just SORN'ed it again, freshly serviced, paintwork corrected, detailed and tucked under cover with the Cetek battery conditioner in place. I've kept the insurance on as my luck dictates the old freezer etc in the garage will go up in smoke if I don't :)

I hate having my pride and J covered in salt/grit and fortunately I've got several other cars to use including a tiddler with winter tyres, but I do admire the forum ice-and-snow warriors :cpilot:
 
Got my refund from the DVLA of £153 so well worth SORN in my view with an ///M if you have no intention of using.
 
You are mad, you're thinking about SORNing while I'm thinking about only using the Z4 as my sole car through winter and SORNing the VX220.

For one month, there's barely any point in doing it to be honest, I SORN the VX220 for 4 months a year (winter) and it's just about ok.
 
remove yourself as a driver from the car, it should then still be insured for theft etc but not for driving around. I did this when I had a 30 day speeding ban :-( :tumbleweed:
 
Check with your insurance before you make any assumptions that the insurance is still valid if the car is SORNed. I have 2 Jeeps on near permenant SORN and the insurance is certainly NOT valid on the policies I had. I had to take out 'laid up' insurance for that purpose.

Stopped bothering with that now as they are locked up in secure warehouse in a deserted farm.

Advise about batteries is good as is turning over the car every month, but only if you run it long enough to get everything warm. Overinflate the tyres too if you plan to leave it months.
 
Interesting comments here - you need also to think that if insurance is not valid and your car is garaged what is the position, god forbid if your garage went up in flames - doubt if your houshold / buildings insurance would cover the replacement cost. . .

Funny you should mention that as a few years back I had a trailer stolen from a yard. I was advised if it had been attached to the car then the car insurance would cover it. If left on my drive or private land then the house insurance would cover it. Since it was neither I took the loss....

Bottom line with such things is the need to call your insurance company and ask, not assume good or bad.
 
been having the "sorn or not sorn " debate also .
MOT is being done on Zed 12th dec then insurance on 26th dec / roadtax on 31st dec .
mrs w needs roadtax on her golf 31st dec then roadtax on my transit 31st jan :cry: MOT on mrs w,s golf end of feb / MOT on transit first week march then insurance on transit middle of march
add in the fact jan is sh1te & i,m away first week in feb so maybe the SORN is a good idea ?
just know that i will want to get out in it & the thought of 2 months garaged is not filling me with glee :thumbsdown:
 
for what i would have saved i decided not to sorn it, tax'd for another 12 months - £270

Considering SORNing the M over the winter, but do most that do this have a nice cosy garage to store the car in? Does anybody do it to a car that lives outside?
 
My coupe is permanently outside in all weathers. It gets used in all weathers too. For me it doesn't matter when you use the car as I paid a lot for it and I intend to use it. If it was an M then I may sorn it, but I'm not worried about the salt and snow as it can be damaged at any time by someone else who can drive into me, even in the summer months. So for me, just drive it.

Gonna be sorning mine this year..it will live outside albeit under a cover
 
I honestly don't think its worth it, especially on the non M cars where the tax is way cheaper. I wouldn't suspend/canx the insurance either, even if it is garaged because you never know what can happen. For the £20 something a month I think its worth keeping it taxed and giving it a run around the block or to the supermarket etc every few weeks or so just to keep everything freed up, clean up the brakes and give the engine/clutch/gearbox/diff and fuel pump etc a regular run.

Plus for me its handy to have a third car sat there ready to roll in case one of the others has a failure you have immediate alternative transport. Let's also not forget those winter days ideal for roof down motoring with the heated seats and heater on!
 
I will SORN mine for the winter - used to pay annually but now use the DD system - £25 a month - it's so easy to SORN online and does make sense economically . Car is permanently linked to Ctek trickle charger and is garaged - never had a problem with tyres/fuel etc but we do have a slightly warmer climate down here :D :D

Insrance is only £155 fully comp ( I'm ancient and live in a low risk area ) so not worth trying to suspend it for the winter
 
My Zed is a dry weather 2nd car. I wouldnt dream of putting it on a winter SORN as you can get some really good days and there is nothing better than roof down on a cold day. Also as is the case with most cars underuse is a real killer even if you start it regularly - it needs a good run to blast out all that condensation build up in engine and exhaust.
 
Toying with SORNing the M, as we still have the wife's E89 for the odd sunny day.

Plus since the JCW arrived the M hasn't left the garage. Hoping it's just new toy syndrome!
 
I can understand why you'd SORN a Zed if you live north of, say, Birmingham and you're likely to get a lot of snow and ice. Down here in the South East we get so many sunny, crisp and dry days in the winter I wouldn't contemplate SORNing mine.

That said, if I SORNed mine I'd have walk 10 miles to/from the station! :P
