To Mod or not to Mod...

New to this site. I've been on Bimmerpost since I bought my coupe, pretty good info there but im very happy to have found a community devoted to our beloved Z4 - especially one with a M specific forum!

So here in HK my M coupe is 1 of 9 originally imported. I could be wrong but from what I gather only about 1015 RHD M Coupes were ever produced. IMO, a sure fire future classic. On Sunday morning drives you see 10 458's, 15 MP4-12C's, 3 Aventadors, 5 599's, too many to count F430's, 911's for days, but only 1 M Coupe...thats pretty cool to me.

looking for some opinions here. The guys I drive with here are all modded e90-92s and I've really got the bug to mod now. I've been fighting the urge hard because I do not want to do anything to ruin the value of the car. Am I crazy?

My car is an 07 Silver-Grey/Black with only 20,000kms on the clock!

The car isn't holding classic value here in the uk! Very lucky if it is over there... :thumbsup:

Modding is never gonna make you money, if you enjoy it go for it

+1, but the residuals on the M do seem to be flattening out quite dramatically, I don't think you'll ever see a good one go for less than £10k and I reckon they are hard enough to get hold of that they will come back up like the M3 CSL.

My prediction. :D
 
If you are going to mod, I'd personally keep it to mods that could be put back to factory spec (should the time come for you to sell up and you don't get much interest)

There would be no issue selling parts separately either.
 
Hi, What sort of mods have you got planned. My last car I sold before getting the M was an Elise which was fairly modified but more to make it a better car (up-rated parts) rather than showy mods, what sort of mods have you got in mind? When I sold it I had kept the original parts so spent a week putting those back on. I sold the up-rated parts, some for more money than I originally paid!
I have thought about what I would do to the M (I have put a stubby on and swapped out the bulbs for leds) and for me it would be up-rated springs and CSL wheels along with some Michelin super sport tyres. :wink: To me it is plenty quick enough and sounds great so no need to touch the engine.
 
Thank you guys. THe HK market is crazy everyone wants new new new, not much appreciation for rare cars. Bottom hasn't hit here either. The only example I could site would be a 993 Porsche, still desirable here, prices have bottomed out and are starting to rise. NeilP, good call on the easy to change parts..thats what I was thinking...now I hope I just don't screw up the sweet factory setup...

Have you guys not seen the car in Hexagon, £24.9k with 18k mls.

OP look at Exdos's modification threads for improving the car performance wise, for looks you can upgrade the wheels, install aero skirts whatever takes your fancy. You'll find lots on here.

IMO to take a Z4M to the top level; I would chance the brakes (AP, Mov'it, Brembo), suspension (Bilstein PS10, KW Clubsport, KW V3), fit a stutbrace, aero skirts and get some lighter OEM CSL wheels with Michelin Supersports (or equivalent). This way; the Z4M looks and drives even better (especially on track days).... If your car does not see any track time, then forget the uprated brakes (waste of money).

Personally I'm not into fitting aftermarket superchargers or turbo's. The only thing I would maybe ever do at the engine is an uprated chip for better engine management and a slight gain in horsepower. For me the Z4M is fast enough and if I wanted a much faster car; I would buy that specific car and leave the Z4M engine for what it is. IMO; more horsepower does not alway means faster. OK; maybe on the street when you are doing a sprint from 0 - 60 at the traffic lights. But who cares about that!? The real difference (on a track) is how good a driver you are and how good you know the track. I have been faster on certain track's then guys with a Ferrari, Corvette, Aston Martin, Lamborghini, etc... On the other hand, there will always be someone that's faster then you...unless you have something really special and expensive.
 
all I really had planned were those OEM CSL wheels, OEM aero sideskirts, brakes, and gloss black roof - I love what it does to the lines of the car especially from a profile view.

I never wanted to mess with the engine exhaust or trans...

Anyway I really appreciate the feedback and happy to have found this site.
