To ///M or not to ///M?

Hello guys,

I'm really struggling with my choice of car. I've ordered a new Z4 3.0si Coupe Sport, but I keep having second thoughts about an ex-demonstrator Z4M Coupe. I found one dealer that has got a Z4M in the right spec costing the same as my Z3 3.0si and he's open to negotiation, so I think I can knock a couple of grand out of it still.

I have read every review I could find of both cars and what I could gather so far is that where the 3.0si feels balanced and fine-handling, the Z4M feels unsettled and difficult to put drive. The reviews range from being a good car with too many flaws (Autocar) down to being a very bad car (J. Clarkson on the Times). Evo has given the 3.0si SE 5 stars saying that it was a trully entertaining car and has given the standard Z4M 4.5 stars and said it was just scraping that mark. It later awarded full 4.5 stars to a modified M that had CLS rims, strut-brace and the styling pack. One thing that no-one can deny though is that the 3.2 engine from the M3 is a fantastic performer and almost impossible to beat. With 80bhp more than the 3.0si and 1 second less in the 0-62mph it must be extremely quick.

My intended used for the new car is entertainment: I do lots of trackdays and every once in a while I will do cruises in the continent. I want something that can trully entertain me on the track and it seems that neither option will fulfill that in standard guise, so I'm considering a number of modifications to make the car handle the way I want. I just think that perhaps the M car will be closer to what I want than the 3.0si, therefore will cost me less in mods and will have that stonking engine that I won't be able to match otherwise. I'm concerned that the 3.0si not having M-diff, having a much softer suspension (because of the runflats) and smaller brakes will require a lot of work to be great, whereas the M perhaps with the strut-brace in the front to give it more rigidity, lighter alloys and better tyres (Michelin PS2) will be there...

What I would like is to get some opinions from people that own both cars about how their cars go. It seems that there are some trackday enthusiasts over here, so I wouldn't mind hearing what you guys got to say.

BTW, I will drive up north this Saturday to test-drive the Z4M in the right spec... :)

dude !!!

check out my post: http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=426

I was about to buy a 3.0si and found a M for the right price... if you're doing trackdays I don't think it's much of a difficult choice.. =)

the way i see it, is that the M costs £47k, which is why it loses points in tests... i bought mine for £31k, and I'm sure if it was more in that region they'd give it the full 5*.

I have the original Top Gear where they tested an Imola Roadster, and they LOVED it... but mainly for track use. You've already got it nailed on.. it will cost a bomb to ditch the runflats and sort the suspension.. you're so much further on to a trackday car with a Monster.

Drive one, and you'll know.

///M - definitely

If you want it for the reason you state you will be a lot happier. The 3.0si is a fantastic motor in its own right but for sheer enjoyment, and track/continental driving, it has to be the M.

A fantastic motor. And a lot of car for the money if you get a 2nd hand one

Get a Nissan Micra... better fuel economy... cheaper... depretiation not too bad (nowhere to go!).... it makes sense!!!!

... just kidding //M all the way!!! :D

If you wanted it for a daily driver in the city, I might say otherwise, but if you want it for the track, then ///M is the one that will make you happier hands down. :)

Wow! I was already 70% convinced, now I'm pretty sure.

The car I have seen is in the perfect spec, perfect colour, 6K miles and the dealer advertised it for £36.5K. I already said that I won't pay that and want to see at least £2K off that price to even consider and the guy said that it was negotiable, so I will be driving up there (it's 93miles North of London, but it is the right car :)) next Sat. and test-driving it.

The ///M does make sense. It will probably be cheaper to buy than the brand new 3.0si and will be far cheaper to get right for the track. M-diff! Hum... :-D

Thanks for the advice guys!

Sounds like it's in my neck of the woods - one of the Sytners in the midlands?

You will not look back in the ///M (well only to see the horizon disappearing) :)

Yep, it's one of the Synters indeed... :-)

Even if you never do track days you should get the ///M. You deserve the BEST!

Thing is: I live and work in Central London and with the busy roads and ever tougher regulations we have nowadays, the only way for me to enjoy my car is on trackdays. That's why I try to do one every month in the summer.

After I've been to the track for the first time I got hooked. I just love it to bits and it also helped me know every bit of my TT's handling and dynamics, so now I trust the car implicitly as I know what it's going to do every time.

Look into the pedulum . . . you feel relaxed and at ease . . follow the pendulums rythmic movements . . . . now listen carefully..

:dizzy:  Yes sir! I obey!

TBH I found the M roadster a very different car to drive straight from a 2.5 Si, it didn't feel so well balanced and I was a little disappointed....for about 10 seconds..

then I realised you have to drive the M very differently, once you grab it and start to use the power to drive out of bends rather than trying to 'flow' the car comes alive. EVO awarded it 5 stars and rated it a better drive than the Boxster S, Clarkson changed his mind and now likes it. and on the Top Gear test track it posted a time that very few (mostly exotica) could beat..

Go on you know it makles sense!!

which track days do you do ?

I do any tracks that I can get to. In June I've been to Bedford Autodrome and this month I've been to Donington Park. I was booked for Castle Combe for the 3rd of August, but now with the change of cars I decided to postpone it to late September.

I just got a call from the BMW dealeship I was going to visit tomorrow and they have sold the car, so I'm not seeing it tomorrow any more. I think I will have to go back looking for it.
