To coupe or not to coupe!

So those of you who have been following my other thread will know that I'm about to splurge quite a bit of cash on completely refreshing my Zed's suspension. I've been thinking about this and having updated my costs spreadsheet find myself in a real conundrum. I love my car, don't get me wrong, the view in the mirrors of those hips makes me smile every day, but I also lost after a coupe. The shape of the back is just sublime. But I've never been in one. Now there is one in the classifieds at the moment which is going for £7900, with some of the mods I want to do already done. I've done the sums and, even allowing for a full Inspection 2 at the seaem price as mine cost which included £250 for Anne AFM, I could have all of the modifications I'm thinking about for my roadster and be £500 up on the deal. Then I'd have my roadster to sell as well! The problems are that I've never been in a coupe and it's an auto not a manual.

So is there anyone close to Rochester or Dover who had a coupe, preferably an auto, who wouldn't mind giving me a ride, or does anyone have any great advice?

I'm soooooo tempted......

Well I can't really help much but for me it just had to be a Coupe because of the shape, and after over 4 years I still love my E86.

It's a shame you are so far away, as I've never been in a Roadster and would be interested to see how different they feel - although my Coupe is a manual.

FWIW if a manual Coupe might be an option there is a private advert for one on AutoTrader for £8,250 that recently had AP coilovers fitted and has CSL replica wheels - although it's in Alfreton so would be a bit of a trek!

Your spot on driving one first. Been in a few and they are quite different. The Auto would be a big change too. Personally I would definitely be having a drive in one before comiting, however tempting the figures are.

I would rather stare at the E86s backside than Kelly Brook's backside......and I really like kelly Brook!

Easiest question ever. To coupe!

I live nowhere near unfortunately, and mine's a manual, but hoping you get a chance to drive one

Tricky one, but I agree. Rachel Riley and I'll have to give it some serious thought...

Bought mine purely on E86 looks alone - not only had I not seen it in person but also had never driven Z4.

6 months on my only regret is that I didn't do it sooner - can't wait for the next excuse to take it out (up in Leeds on Business tomorrow and no way I'm taking the SAAB) and still can resist the sneaky look back after parking.

Also so pleased I didn't go down the SORN route for winter but to be fair I had never really considered it - outside the looks this was the other reason I went down the coupe route

I always knew I wanted a coupe, but I was not sure whether to go manual or auto. The only way to be sure is try. I found the closest dealer to me that had an automatic for sale and took a test drive. I knew it wasn't the spec of car I wanted, but I just wanted to try an automatic.

Coupe all day for me. I started with a 3.0 roadster, it was fantastic, i'm now on to my second coupe. This time i've gone for the auto after having manual in my other two Zeds. Even now, i don't think there are any cars out there in the price range which look as sexy as the Z4 Coupe.

I'm well chuffed with the auto box, too. Slightly more on the mpg than a manual, but nothing to cry about.

Did they use the SMG gearbox from/like the E46 M3 came with?

Talking from experience, the SMG boxes can be a bit Marmite. When on it, they seemed to work well enough, but at slower speeds they can feel jerky and I always found the one in my old man's M3 cab to be a tad slow and stupid. They are not "as" bad as people claimed, but compared to a traditional auto they lack the smoothness and the quickness a more modern DSG box offers.

Coupe - for spirited driving
Vert - for summer time crusin’.

Also recommend a manual box for both cars.

Take your pick.

I have the auto, took me a while to get used to it, but I like it . The E86 is 2nd only to the e type for looks IMO

No, the SMG was only an option on pre facelift roadsters. The only auto option in a facelift E85 and E86 coupe is a conventional 6 speed(?) torque converter auto.

Ok so found a dealer close with a 3.0si SE for sale. Auto box. He wants £11k for it so I'm never going to pay that much but I did get a test drive. Since that was the aim of the game I was happy. Conclusions the Coupe is even prettier kn the flesh and beats the roadster with a hardtop into a cocked hat! Also the autobox suits it for driving in traffic but there was still plenty of grunt available when using the paddle shift , especially with the sport button pressed. And it will let you hold gears and change down even when it's not really advisable!

If you can't tell I think om sold!
