Tires

Hello. I live near Philadelphia and have a z4 m40 on its way. I will NOT drive this car in the snow but it will be my daily drive. For the cold temperatures any reason to get snow tires instead of all weather? I will be changing to summer tires seasonally.

If snow tires what do you recommend?

If you daily it in the winter and for long periods the temps are below say 8c the all season tyres are today the goto answer…winter tyres are these days only really required if you’re driving regularly in snow and compacted ice..

Even within all seasons some tyres are more optimised for snow rather than just cold and wet..

Since US market is served differently best look at US tyre reviews for all seasons ..

IMHO

I would agree wholeheartedly with B21, if you are not driving in the snow then all season tyres are perfectly good for day to day life in cold conditions.

If it's an automatic, the stock size for winter tyres is 255/40 R18's all round, for my first M40i, I went with 255/35 R19 all round and am about to sell them. Now that I have a manual M40i, I'm keen to keep the diameters close to the stock on the rear which are 285/30 R20, so have purchased a set of 799M and fitting Michelin CrossClimate 3 Sports, at 275/35 R19, they look a little stretched. In the US you get more choice it seems than here and there were only a few options.

Sorry to hijack this thread but what options did you look at for a winter setup @sars ? Have an M40i and want to avoid 799s due to cost and rarity second hand.

Note you said 18s would fit but was dubious about M brake clearance. Was considering taking a punt on 19 inch 791M wheels as they are readily available and ChatGPT reckons they should work.

Also gives more tyre options.

Unsure about how they would sit in the arches though!

Any advice appreciated and might start a new thread on this. Thanks.

@Glaikit, the standard winter fitment per BMW is style 798M in orbit grey and are available here, and the BMW list is there, they are 255/40 R18, on 8.5 x 18 ET30 front and 9 x 18 ET32 rear, these will fit over the M Sport brakes. For the M40i automatic I decided to go 255/35 R19's as I preferred the look and I couldn't get any 798M's You have limited options when you reset the TPM system, it's either 255 x 18" or 275x 19" and with the manual you get the option of 285 x 20". So for the 255/35 R19, I selected 255 x 18" as they are the same diameter. I managed to pick up a set of 799M's for £825 on eBay, including tyres and sensors, then spent another £900 on tyres. The problem with the 275/35 R19 winter set up is choice, from a premium tyre front it is either Michelin or Goodyear.

Awesome info, thanks @sars appreciate your quick reply. That is a bargain for the 799s and if I could find a set they cheap would go for it. Cheapest I’ve seen is over a grand so far.

Might investigate the 798s 👍🏻
