Tires - 08 M Roadster

Car is an M Roadster (08). I'm hoping someone can give me a good tire recommendation. The car came with Continental ContiSports. Some people did not like this tire - but I did. I wanted to replace it with the same OE tire - but apparently it's not available in this size any more.

So, I'd like to get either Michelins or Continentals (summer tire). These are my choices:

My gut tells me just to go with the Continental Extreme Contact DW. The car is just driven on the street - it's not a race car. People seem to really like the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2s though, but looking at Tire Rack I can't see why they would be any better (just costlier) than the Michelin Pilot Super Sports.

Anyone know the difference between PS2s and the Pilot Super Sports? Is it just the PS2s are OE - is that why they cost more?

Any feedback on the Continentals?

PS2 is an old tyre now, PSS is much newer and the technology has moved on since PS2/CS3.
PSS are great tyres apart from being a little noisy but not really a problem on a roadster.

PSS is equivalent to Conti Sport Contact 5/Goodyear Eagle F1 AS2 with better dry grip at the expense of a little wet weather capability, depends what you want really but can't go wrong with either three.

Neil.

The Continental Extreme Contact DW is an excellent option for the M. I used them from 2009 until last year when I decided to try Michelin Super Sports. You can not go wrong with either tire.

Hi Swanky
I was like you with my 08 3.0si
The car is used on the street and for light touring.
Actually for touring I put the stock Bridgestones back on.
I went with the Michelin Pilot Super Sports.
And they are a great tire.
And Im convinced most reviews reflect the price paid vs any extreme improvement.

If there is a next time, I would go for the Contis
Another great tire, and a better value in my opinion.
Plus they are on sale too !

I agree with your profiles as well.
My Michelins are front 40, rear 35
Next time F 45, r 40.
My bet is that will be more comfortable.

Good luck
Bumpy

I totally agree with Neil - The PSS is noticeably noisy compared to stock.

Pilot Super Sport are great.
Hated the Conties on mine.

Have to ask, cos I'm a bumb arse Brit. Do they really spell Tyre with an I in the USA? Or is that a typo, on the web site and your Post. :?

swanicyouth, you won't be able to obtain any feedback on the Continental Extreme Contact DW from our UK members here as the Continental Extreme Contact DW is only sold in North America. However all the various reviews for the Continental Extreme Contact DW have been very positive. You would be hard pressed to see a difference with everyday driving between Continental Extreme Contact DW and Michelin Super Sports. In fact for wet conditions I would give a slight edge to the Continental Extreme Contact DW over the Super Sports.

Hanks everyone for your input. I think I'll just go with the Contis - as the original ContiSports served me well - plus they are a few bucks cheaper than the Michelins - which never hurts.

I had Conti M3s all round. They gave OK dry grip but we're not great in the cold or wet. They were designed for the car however and the car did not tramline or show much effect from camber when running these tyres.

I switched to Michelin PSS and they are amazing. Fantastic dry and wet grip compared to the Conti's. Not too bad with tramlining but significantly affected by road camber compared to the OE Conti M3s.
