Tire wear

I know there are several queries similar, but the search didn't quite answer this for me. Am buying a 2005 model, and the rear tires have about 4mm of tread on them -- how many miles should I expect out of these before having to replace? They are Bridgestone 255 35s. I am thinking if getting less than a couple thousand miles should be negotiating a discount for something like half the replacement cost of them..any thoughts? Thanks!!
 
so difficult to predict tyre wear as it depends on so many things...

state/surface of the roads you drive on
driving style

for information my bridgestone rears lasted about 12k, the michelins on now currently done 15k and will need to be replaced soon.

Depends how low you go with it - BMW recommend change at 3mm whereas the legal minimum is 1.6mm

Legal limit is 1.6mm in the UK not sure what it is in Canada - but on a performance car I would suggest 3mm or thereabouts is a good guide to start thinking of replacement.
 
Thanks for a couple of quick replys, are there any estimates of how many miles it should take to wear these down to either the 3mm or the legal limit? Just on average driving - or maybe slightly more aggressive as will want to play once I get my hands on it. I mean I will likely put 1,000 miles on quite quickly especially if we get a few more sunny weekends. What I was originally trying to get a handle on was do i need to figure in the cost of replacing them in the next couple of months, and therefore put some of that cost to the seller of the car?

*Note - I'm actually in the UK (Surrey atm), only chose Canada in the profile setup as that's where I grew up.
 
Well Im in Surrey too...
so that 15k has taken me two years driving mainly at weekends and I will probably replace them before our holiday in July. was flagged in the MOT as 4mm tread - causing an 'amber' warning from the dealer and they are now down to about 3mm. Fronts are wearing much better still having about 6mm left.

edit: to add the bridgestones took 18 months and 12k to wear out to replacement depth
 
A set of rears last me around 13-14k. As there is ~6mm usable tread before replacement, thats ~2250miles per mm :)
 
I would say, try for a good discount then get rid of the tyres after the first couple of months for non RFT's. Do not let the dealer suggest replacing the tyres, cos then you're saddled with a full set of Bridgestones RFT's again.

or try to get them to change 'em for Michelin RFT - oodles better even though not many believe me :roll:
 
My Goodyear F1 asymetricals are at 3mm after 10k,but that includes a track day, so they'll be toast by 12000.Looks like par for the course for all makes for the rears.The fronts are also still on 6mm.You'd be wanting to haggle for a bit of money off for the tyres. Don't, just don't, let them fit a new set of Bridgestone runflats,they're horrid.
 
The one I am buying is a similar situation. Managed to negotiate 50% of the replacement price of as a discount on the price. That one had 3-4mm on most of the tyres, but 2mm on the inside edges. The owners seemed to think that they would last another 4-5k miles, but then he would :)
