Tips required for removing the rear badge!

Hi guys and girls,

Do you have any tips for removing the rear BMW badge on the boot lid?

Mine is worn so I've bought an OEM replacement, got the grommits too, but can't get the old badge out! Been trying on and off for what seems like ages now.

I've tried some fine fishing line but can't get it sufficiently round the back of the badge to get any leverage on it. I tried some even finer line which did get behind but it broke and the badge didn't move at all.

I don't want to use a screwdriver wrapped in cloth as I'm worried about marking the paint work.

My last attempt was pulling on gaffa tape stuck to the front but that doesn't even come close. Struggling for ideas right now!

Use a hair dryer to heat it up - a lot! That will soften the badge / glue and you can just pull it off with your fingers without wire.

I didn't think there was any glue behind the rear badge? If there is, this will explain why I can't get the line behind it!

The rear is fastened in by no more than friction fit on 2 pins inside grommets, so perhaps someone has glued it on

I simply wrapped a thin wallpaper scraper in cloth, slid that under and off it popped.

If you really, really, really can't remove it then I'd dril a hole in the badge face and put a self tapper in an pull on that. I have to stress care needed and can't see the need but if you're risking scratching paint messing with screwdrivers, then this may be the way to go. It may be a case of destrroying the badge bit by bit to get at the backing

Must read properly next time ... I was reading the rear badge as in Z4 badge ... not the roundel.

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure I can get a wallpaper scraper plus cloth behind. There is practically no gap at all so it would have to be really really thin. I might check the DIY shop tomorrow and see what I can find.

I've also tried a SatNav sucker but that can't get a good enough seal on it.

The idea about getting something into the badge to pull it out, or maybe hook it out sounds like a winner. Obviously, expert care required!

I used a 2 butter knives to pop mine out (one on the top and bottom - but i nearly gave up as it was very hard work to remove - had little room for leverage and I was scared of damaging the paint.

Eventually brute force won... but both of the plastic pins snapped inside the rubber holes when i got the badge off, which i had to drill out before i fitted my replacement.
