Biggest thing i've found to make a real difference is to never let the suds or water dry on the paint-always keep it wet until you come to drying off. Easier said than done in the summer months so i find i rinse several times during the washing.
After that i always pat dry the car to avoid scratches and swirls-if you haven't let any water dry on the car then its more than enough to leave good finish. If you find there are water marks that you want to rub away then you should have kept it wetter
