Tinting side view mirrors. Bad idea?

My M doesn't have the auto-dimming mirror feature. When I drive at night the light refelction from the side view mirrors really bug me, especially since mine's lowered. I've been thinking about tinting the side view mirrors with light tint like 50% to cut down the glare a little. Has anyone done this? Can this be a bad idea?

Sorry, have the auto dimming mirrors on my M, so can not help you with that :P

Does the auto dimming mirror thing include the side mirrors ??, i haven't noticed a light diode on the side mirrors of mine but the internal mirror has one ???

In the UK, you have to order the folding/dimming mirror package to get it. All inside mirrors dim.

In the US, the inside and outside mirrors are tied together. If the sensor inside the rearview mirror causes a change, then the outside mirrors will change also :)

Don't forget the are permanently heated. (I think in an earlier thread the US one's were, UK certainly) I'm not sure a tint would stand up to being baked every day.

think you have to have an offside mirror... could be wrong though :?
True, on some cars the passenger side mirror was an option. Things have come a long way

In fact, maybe they've updated the laws to suit the fact that all cars now come with a mirror on each side as standard.

North American M's have auto-dimming mirrors tied into the Premium Package. I didn't think you could get it as an à la carte option.

So... are you saying that you don't have Premium Package in your car? i.e. no Caver sound system, cruise control, nor bluetooth? That's interesting. Definitely some weight savings to the car, that's for sure. :)

I think 50% VLT tint should work well. Either that or wear sunglasses 24/7... cause when you're cool, the sun shines on you all 24 hours. 8)

Nope. Got none of those. :D I did want to keep the car as lightweight as possible before I ordered the car. I had power seats in my '04 3.0i and I can probably count the number of times I had to adjust them with 1 hand. I'm not an audiophile so the sound system didn't matter to me either, and I had plans for aftermarket mufflers already. And I hate talking on the phone while I'm driving, with or without bluetooth (and it wouldn't make sense with the aftermarket mufflers anyway). I know my hardtop contradicts my trying to keep the car light-weight. But what can I say? I was a convertible guy when I bought the car. It wasn't until later that I saw the light and became a coupe guy.

Well, I might have the driver side done and see how well it works. You guys have brought up a good point about the heated mirror melting the tint film. Well, I'll find out the hard way I guess. I'm actually not too worried about the tint film on the outside and exposed to the enviroments as opposed to window tint since I've had smoked tint film on my tail lights for about 1 year and it holds up just fine.

Well, the only other feature that I miss is cruise control.:( At the time I thought it can be easily retrofitted like the regular Z4's. Cruise control really comes in handy on long trips (+100 miles). I was always able to get better gas mileage on my '04 3.0i with the cruise control on as well.

Oddly enough, Cruise Control is standard on the canadian Z4M while it is part of the premium package in the U.S. of A. :scratchhead:
