Tint top windscreen option

I’m moving closer to making this happen. Had a quote of £225 plus vat for a replacement including the top tint, and that’s without bothering the insurer. Reputable local business. Fit at home or I can take it in (or rather I could if ‘she’ wasn’t SORN until April) What do we think?

That seems like a good price but I assume that isn't for a genuine BMW screen? I am not sure if it makes a difference now but years ago I had a non genuine window put on a Toyota and the quality wasn't great.

No it’s not going to be BMW. I suspect that would be a £500 option, to get a roundal in the corner. My screen has some historical wiper scrapes in the glass (on when I got her) which won’t polish out. I’m guessing any screen which doesn’t come from the dealership is going to be aftermarket and will be of subjective quality. For a car that’s doing sun-1000 miles a year I need to be sensible with my spend (although I said that about most components and it’s not held me back. The tyre choice was going to be Toyo or similar and I went all in for Conti 7s)

I was told by Auto Windscreens (circa 2018) that the aftermarket kit that they fit, is produced in the same factory as the branded stuff.
The chap also said that if the car has any BMW stuff fitted to the screen that requites calibration, then BMW marked screens are fitted as they didn’t have the kit to do it in house and it has to go to a dealership who won’t look at non BMW stuff - that was true of 2018.

Surely your windscreen excess is around £100?
Why not get it done under insurance? Then get a tinted one for the excess?
They don't ask to see the old one, but may only want you to use Auto Windscreens or a national supplier.

Maybe we need to drive in a fire helmet… (library pic, mine never had the gold visor)
I wish I had a gold helmet.....I guarantee it would have made my life much more fun. :D

Hmm, having decided to take the plunge, turns out the £225 option supplier no longer has any! You lot must have got in quick! 😉 I’ve been offered an alternative from a second supplier, but more money, and low stock. I guess there’s not going to be 100’s of E89 screens sitting around waiting to match to cars any longer. I need to count my pennies again and determine if it’s really necessary, alternatively look at the insurance option…
Just renewed the insurance with Aviva (was with LV) through Confused.com for Feb at £193 (there’s a small benefit to getting old)

Was there not talk, the last year or so, of huge shortages and therefore supply of screens ?
If i remember some had started stocking a spare ?

Still waiting for my benefits lol (although big year this year)

I’ll check in the morning which brand of screen was fitted to mine last year, the fitter (range through insurance) did an excellent job imho

I took 3 weeks to arrive in stock, like you say not many E89’s = not many in stock

My local (reputable) fitter says he sources from 4 national companies. Not all had an E89 option. As I asked for a tinted top, that limited it further. He does say the more expensive option is from a very good supplier, be good to see if it matches yours. Double checked the Zed last night to make sure it didn’t require any other options such as auto wipers and/or lights… nope! It’s also still got its original BMW stamped screen.

Here you go ….. say hi to my reflection 😊👋

Fuyao are one of BMW’s OEM suppliers of glass.

FYI almost got a hernia snapping this lol.

We have a delay as I needed to get some work done on the CLS including a service and MoT. The old girl (today) failed the test on some age related suspension-y thingies which needed replacing. Bugger. Then I want to get the front bumper on the CLS repainted to make her showroom fresh (she’s 10yo) Then, hopefully, back to the Z4
