Tinny doors

The best stuff,imo,is Dynamat soundproofing sheets (similar to what cj10 describes above).
this has been used for years inn car audio circles,and will quieten down the tinny sound just nicely/tho i have still to do mine! :oops:

Look for it in car audio stores/google it.

:poke: Gotta say, I don't think the doors on mine sound 'tinny' at all, in comparison to other cars of a luxury badge or convertibles. Haven't compared it to post-facelift Zed though. Mine's an 04.

I don't think I'd use the word "tinny" either, but there's definitely a sort of rattle when they shut which I definitely spotted when I first got the car. They all seemed to do it though so I didn't think too much of it.

Having seen those pictures in this thread of the interior of the door, I suspect it's just the inner of the door vibrating. They're certainly weighty things anyway, my driveway's on a slant and they often swing back into my legs, so I know!

I'm so glad I searched for this before posting a new posting about how my doors sound on closing, see it's the norm although I have to say I was surprised to hear the 'hollowness' of the door when I first collected mine and even thought that I would break something if I slammed it too hard!

Sadly, I have to agree on this one. Not at all happy with the sound of my doors closing.
Have to do something about it, but I think I'll wait until it gets warmer.

Car has been garaged since October, so I'm really feeling the itch now (you all know what I'm talking about :D )
 
this is something i have been thinking of doing for a while, as the doors on the earleir models do sound tinny - its a fact. anybody have a how to guide, with detailed instructions, i always get a bit nervous when taking a perfectly good car to pieces.
 
The what I have been describing as "clangy" door thing has been irritating me too, especially when you see other cars a quarter of the price have a nice, solid, muffled thud. I too take refuge in the fact that all Z4s do it but I still find it embarrassing when you see others reaction to it :(
 
In taking the door apart I would be more concerned by the potential for additional sources of rattle.

How about injecting with expandable foam via the door catch ?!?!? lol

I owned a Boxster S for awhile. The doors in that car definately had a "tinny" sound when closed. The Z4 is a much more "solid" sound as compared to that. I don't think I'd mess with them. Z4 Pilot
 
I got tired of the tinny doors and I end up buying some Dynamat Xtreme. I've been planing on removing the door panels and lubricate the window rails before they fail and I figured I do it the job once and never do it again. I'll have a project for Memorial Day weekend and if you guys are interested I can snap some pix...

I was looking around on Youtube and the net in general for best practices. It seems like lots of folks use the Dynamat in place of the weather guard while I was actually thinking about installing it in the inner side of the door. What would the pros suggest? Can I apply it without removing the entire window mechanism?
