Just wondering if anyone has used this timing tool set? Seems much cheaper than some others......just wondering what the quality is like?

I've read mixed reviews of third party timing sets- seems some are fine but some don't sit straight on the head. No idea on this one though :) might be worth asking on some m3 forums given how many e46 m3s are out there.

How much is the genuine BMW kit? Half a kidney or a whole one?

Yes I've heard the same. I bought an especially cheap camshaft locking tool kit off ebay and it seems OK but I haven't gotten to using it yet. I'm not too worried though, because I have machine tools in my garage so I can modify easily enough if necessary ;)

My locking tool set as per my original post arrived today, as my cam cover was off due to reshimming the valves I set N0.1 cylinder at TDC and tried the tool on....perfect fit, in fact I’m very pleased with the fit and finish of the complete set.
The only issue I had was that the locking pin that inserts into the vibration dampener was too long to insert due to the steel panel that sits just in front of it. Rather than cut the pin shorter I managed to find a socket that was the correct size. (See photos)
