Timing chain issue ?

Absolutely gutted for you.

For my penny’s worth after reading all the thread & everything else that’s been tried, has anyone checked for sticking valves not getting enough oil?

Do you mean the hydraulic lifters? They make more of a “ticking” sound as apposed to the “tinkling, rattle” sound of a flailing chain :?
Rob

Hi Rob, missed yr reply.

Whilst agree lifters are hydraulic, I believed you still have the sprung valve stem for its return.

My thoughts were if there was any minor delay in their retraction after each cycle it’d affect combustion.

+1 on hearing if there was any update

Hi people. First time back to this site for a while. No, never did sort the issue. £1,200 in and just drove it through the whole of the summer 2018. The noise was there but didn't effect performance etc. Just had to live with it....

Another post to follow tonight - anybody want a winter project.....?

Cooky,
I have the same problem! I read through all the posts and couldn't believe that after all the work that was done, there was no resolution.
I got my used certified Z4 in 2006 with 17k miles. I only use it locally in the summer (Michigan winters) so in 14 years it's only at 43k. I've had the exact same rattle symptoms for a number of years (none at idle, short rattle just off idle as revs rise then disappears and I can hear it in teh timing chain case). Don't notice it when driving and it doesn't seem to be getting worse. Looking at my records, BMW service listed 'intermittent engine rattle' at idle in 2008 with cause as DISA valve flap loose and they replaced the valve. Wonder if this was the same noise that came back or this was an unrelated issue... I've lost track.
Thought I'd let you know you are not alone!
Best Simon.
