That is what really impresses me about the 640d in that it weighs 1800kgs yet it still manages to return 40 mpg and I think that is really good going for the performance it offers, and the 600 mile range helps cut down the fill ups a little too.Sae said:bluestreak56 said:Just completed 665 miles on a single tank (45 mpg) with almost all motorway miles.
I'm going to try and get 700 but I think it will be tough and require sitting at 56mph on a motorway without any town driving!
That's pretty impressive considering your lugging what - 1800kgs about, however not keen on the filling up station bills at the end![]()
Sae said:Btw, did you try putting it in neutral on downhill parts can you do that in the 8sp auto? What happens if you hit the stop button? Do you loose power steering and servo brakes?
Nb, theoretically speaking mind!

If I had to be harsh though a Diesel engine hardly ever gets the pulse racing sadly and I wish they offered the X4 M40i in the UK because that looks like a really stunning bit of kit 8)

Hi Sae, its more economical if you leave a car in gear on downhill sections as they use no fuel that way, if put in neutral the engine is still burning fuel in order to tick-over![]()

If that's true, then its worth knowing![]()

I believe it is.
My A3 is more economical in 'drive' than it is in 'eco'. The only difference is it doesn't knock itself into neutral when the throttle stops being applied.

Sae said:Does it smart coast like the Porsche Pdk?
I thought the Pdk also disengages drive so that there is no engine braking during coasting phase - although that was maybe the Pdk gen1 ?
Nb. On my old commute, I used to get about 4-5more mpg using in neutral method, as there were a few pretty long stretches of low downhill gradient that you could coast, however, if left in gear would slow car down enough to warrant hitting the gas.
That is stunning mpg and I am happy with around 40 out of a 640d and I am yet to see much better though, but I have read many times that both the 335d/435d deliver far better figures from the same engine and I would love to know why for sure.sars said:I believe mine has smart coast in eco pro, very weird feeling so I don't use it but regularly get 53 mpg on the journey down to Bristol, not bad I feel given the engine and power train

I believe they are all of a similar weight and I know a 335d touring is only 45kg lighter than a 640d Coupe so it is interesting stuff, I have fuel economy envy...sad I know but that's really why we buy a diesel in the first place!![]()
I think that's where I am going wrong sars!sars said:LeeZ4MR said:That is stunning mpg and I am happy with around 40 out of a 640d and I am yet to see much better though, but I have read many times that both the 335d/435d deliver far better figures from the same engine and I would love to know why for sure.sars said:I believe mine has smart coast in eco pro, very weird feeling so I don't use it but regularly get 53 mpg on the journey down to Bristol, not bad I feel given the engine and power train

Maybe the answer is not to drive everywhere in Sport +![]()
.....oh and my convertible weighs in at a giddy 1925 kg, though it feels lighter, the Merc felt very front heavy in comparison
