Time for the 18i to go!

So after a years ownership I have decided to get rid of my 18i... Obviously love the e89 but the power is lacking way too much and I'm not a fan of the 4 cylinder engines.

I tried the 20i and still not really impressed. I am thinking 28i, 35i or 35is if I am to stick with a zed. I am going to the dealer on Friday to see the new M4 but they said straight away theres a waiting list and there won't be any decent discounts.

They are still offering great discounts on the 640d M sport which may be a good choice. Completely different car and much bigger but it has great performance and economy.

If there wasn't much of a price difference what would you pick...28i - 35is or the 640d? (I know there's a big difference in price but hypothetically what would you do...)

I guess I am trying to justify my next purchase lol.

Very different choice of cars, especially engine wise.

There are some great discounts on all them three cars, but what made me choose an 28i and coming down from an 335i. Was cost of ownership, I am saving £80 per month by having an 28i compared to an 335i

For performance 28i with an JB4 is comparable to an 335i up-to 100 Mph - but getting an extra 10 mpg.

However....

If I did not use my car for work, I would go for an 640d - but its just too big.

And the 4 Series is also an big car,as I did consider the 235i - as this was an better size for me - and fairly comparable to an 335i.

To be honest I will most probably go with whatever I can get the most discount on. Ideally I would like a M4/4 series but the offers they have on the 6 series makes it cheaper to get that over a 4 series.... Surprising considering the overall price difference of the cars.

The offer they gave me is quite amazing for a so called 70k car (even though I don't think its anywhere near worth that).

£450 a month plus a £3500 deposit incl VAT.

I will see on Friday what they can offer on a 35i/35is and a range of 4 series.
 
yes - you are correct. My mistake!

I just did insurance quotes and its an absolute killer in Manchester.

£1700 for a 640d and £1350 for a 35i.
 
Be surprised if there are any discounts on the M4 as there's a waiting list.

There should always be deals available on Z4 as they're not a great seller. I would look at the 35i over the 2.8 and if moving away from the Zed then look at the M135i as it's a complete steal and a pretty special little car. It definitely feels much more rounded and modern compared to my previous E89.

There are big discounts on the M135i and 640d in particular. My local dealer has an event on this weekend and they are selling unregistered new stock at big discounts - a 640d for £46k (list £70k), M135i Auto for £28k (list £34k).

That is a good price for an M135i. I started to look at them but the looks and the fact I really wanted a convertible kind of stopped the searching !

I think the 640d is a superb car but the list is not what they are sold for anywhere + it is huge and unless doing big journeys a pointless car.
 
The 640d always catches my eye. Such a stunning car and had loads of practicality and performance. But I think most normal (non car) people don't give it a second look.

However I've only owned the Z for 3 months and I've already come back to several people staring or checking out the car.
I think it depends on your age/family situation and if you want the attention a flash car brings. The 640d may have a huge sticker price but you can park it up anywhere and it will just blend in.

Out of the M135i, 35is and the 640d I would take the 35is. But that's because I have no need for rear seats or a big boot.

If they are giving the 640d away at £450 per month then hopefully it will have shocking residuals. Should be a great buy in 3 years for motorway mile munching!

46k for a 640d!!

I'm guessing a 3yr old one at 50k miles will be hovering just above the 22k mark if they follow the previous generation for depreciation.
 
Tim - I agree with the m135i. Brilliant car and i loved test driving it but I personally want a slight step up from the zed (don't take that the wrong way lol)

R.E92 - Very true - people love the zed but don't have a clue what the 6 series is and don't look twice. The zed is unique in its own way. I'm 25 and have no kids.... the 6 series might not fully suit me yet haha

To be honest I could live with either - preference would be the 35i or 35is (simply because of looks and its size) but it will come down to what they offer. I am planning on financing so unless the 35i/s is significantly lower than 450 a month, it will most probably be the 640d.

Having said all of that I need to find cheaper insurance!

There are one year old ex demo 640ds with under 2k miles going for £38-£40k... absolute bargain if you have the cash to buy it!
 
If you're 25 then I would leave practical cars for later. You can own that luxury barge when you're going bald and have to haul around smelly children.

I'm 27 so decided to throw caution to the wind and buy something that uses lots of fuel and is completely impractical. So far I do not regret my decision.

I'm finding it a brilliant step up from the Zed and not just the performance, still miss the Zeds looks though :)
