Ticking sound

Hi all,

Just recently, mainly with the windows down, I can hear a slight ticking sound coming from the engine. I only seem to notice it when the sound bounces off walls, you can't hear it when changing gear and will speed up/slow down according to revs. When stationary the engine seems normal.
Have read that the S54 is a fairly noisy engine so any ideas if I should be worried?

Cheers guys

Jon

They definitely sound 'ticky' off walls, I've had 3 of these engines now. Unless you can hear something when you're driving not past a wall and without the windows down I really wouldn't worry.
For piece of mind you might want to get your favourite indy to have the rocker cover off and have a look at the state of the cams and followers, not a big job.

Sure it's not the brake discs rubbing slightly ??

What, that goes up and down to engine revs but not speed, no.

They are noisy engines, certainly not like the creamy smooth straight six in their normal cars.

Get it checked out for peace of mind....

An hours labour now could save many if you leave it...

I know exactly what You mean! :D After I bought my car, I was also concerned. There are a lot of threads about it ;) Nothing to worry about - it's just it's special character  :driving:

Mine makes exactly the same noise. From outside it sound little bit different, like ticking noise You've mentioned.

When were the valve clearances last checked?
Last inspec 2 was done around 20k ago but unfortunately no paperwork just the stamp in the book. Its due in 2k anyway so may book it in a bit earlier.

No, can't hear it normally but then again i do have a supersprint lol Can only hear it when it reverberates off walls.

If it gets significantly worse over the next 30-50 miles, you have your answer!
Have done a fair few miles since I first noticed it and it doesn't seem to have got worse.

Yep, that sounds just like my engine. Guess they are just noisy buggers then

I still find new noises that worry me, trying to not notice them before they go again.

I've heard the same wall reflected ticking very early into ownership, offputting eh!

The hissing in that video is the plus-air system for the cat pre heating..? It stops after a few minutes.

the injectors can emit a loud tick too, put you ear to the Valve cover and you'll soon hear if theirs any untoward noises coming from the top of the engine, if your local, I'm more than happy to check your Valve clearances for piece of mind :-) i have all the tools etc to do so.

Thanks for the offer Beedub, may take you up on it. Even though i think it's normal, probably best to get someone to have a look :)
Also, seems it's never had an inspec 2, my dad misread the book lol  but it's due in about 4k miles.
