The cams are fairly high lift and have an "aggressive" shape to the lobes which leads to the valve gear being more tappety than you might expect. I find this to be most noticable at around 2-3000 rpm on the over run, especially with the driver's side window open and a hard surface (a wall, stationary vehicles, etc) adajcent to the offside of the car. I'm not sure if this the same thing you are describing, try what I've described and see if it sounds like it. At higher rpms, induction and exhaust noise drown out any ticking.
