tick tick tick please help...!

I've seen 120C on occasion but I prefer not to run that hot. It gets up to 110C pretty quickly on the track, a significant rise from the normal just-to-the-left-of-vertical position. I do at least one oil change between every scheduled service, be that an oil service or inspection. I might do two or three oil changes if I'm spending a lot of time at the track.

The Evernturi arrived yesterday, taking it down to the indy this morning. They haven't even started on my car yet as they had a 1 series that went in a day or two before mine with a blown engine. As its a someones daily they have asked to do that first, it was the dreaded timing chain failure. So still waiting... but at least all my kit is here now :D I have my custom remap booked with Evolve on the 22nd. Missing the fun in the sun...

Hope all goes to plan for you  :driving: :driving:

Hmmm.....

Old but shouldn't really cause a prob.. Although I would recommend new oil before track days...

105-110 isn't excessively high at all... I have heard of M3's at temps of 120+ before stopping.... Personally I wouldn't go that far.. The temp you went to seems acceptable to me, but the guys who regularly track there M's will give better info

Nah guys, I'm sorry but that's very hot. Mine does plenty of track days at full on rpm 20 mins sessions all day long and the temp has never even in full summer reached barely above the half way mark 110 degrees C max. I'd presume the wrong oil being used for the service, too low pressure or old oil.

I agree that 120C is hot but I expect to see 110C on a track day, winter or summer. My car never goes long enough between services to have 'old' oil as such, but I see 110C even with oil that was changed the day before.

Similar here.

The only time it's shown hotter is this year's trip to the 'Ring where I got a coolant warning light and temps from the OBD interface of 118c. The ambient temp wasn't anywhere near as hot as it has been there, so it's not that, and it's fine on normal road use - unless you get stuck in traffic.

So have added a radiator and cooling system overhaul to my ever-increasing list of maintenance and need it before my next trip. We're going to do the water cooling first to see if that's the cause, before doing anything to the oil cooling side (possibly with a well-priced oil cooler from Beedub) )

Still got plenty in the pipeline that I've either not got the time or cash for at the moment (Alcon calipers; new discs & pads all round; clutch & flywheel; front end respray).

Car is being worked on this week so all being well I should have her back end of Friday :o

Lucky! Mine is at the dealer, and they are telling me that camshafts are on back order - no eta for my car! :(

Last time i was in the BMW workshop, they had an M3 CSL in the workshop and it had been there over a year waiting for a set of cams. They are different of course, but wouldnt be happy if it was mine.

The dealer I'm at told me they had a CSL in waiting for cams for 18 months!

Oh no, sorry to hear you don't even have an eta !! :o

When I recently bought my Schrick cams I wanted the 288s (Stage 2 Upgrade) but they were out of stock and had no eta, due to the alloy that is used being out of stock worldwide. So I ended up getting the 280/272s (Stage 1 Upgrade). They were in stock in Germany and were in my hands 6 days after ordering from ca-int. I was really chuffed. Not sure why the OEM cams would be out of stock unless there is such a demand for them now the S54 is getting on a bit and people across the world are hitting these issues with high wear.

I saw a post somewhere from that guy, it's true! Funny thing is I've been told quite reliably that schrick made the CSL cams in the first place.

That's what I thought! The CSL has shrick cams but maybe not the followers?

It happened at last! Got the beast back today after 5+ weeks awol.. really happy with the result! :driving: I am a little surprised just how quiet the engine is at idle and there is absolutely NO ticking, clicking. Makes me wonder how many vids of S54 owners saying "yea my engine is pretty normal, these noises are totally fine....". Before the work I know mine was ticking like mad so the contrast is evident.
The Schricks I have are the 280s CSL spec and are perfect at idle, no lumpiness. They seem to perform without any issue at all with the standard ecu map. I will report back once the custom map is applied in a week or so. All the smoothness checks out and he had no issue sorting the timing/vanos hookup.

I am loving the eventuri - it sounds lovely better in the flesh than any vid I have heard. And the throttle response is really sharp, I can't say how much more than before as not driven her for a while.

In a way the cams/followers needing replacing was a blessing in disguise. At 91,000 miles my head gasket was not damaged really badly but was showing signs of thinning and some wear patches that looked dodgy. And we know how dramatic it can be when that goes... so happy to get that sorted too. I said to Paul at the garage to treat the car like his own and do anything he wasn't happy with. He is a perfectionist so the result is spot on.

The summary of the work I was charged for was:
Labour for replacing head gasket, fit DLC followers, Schrick cams
Labour for Shimming to the 0.25 spec
Labour for OEM strut brace fitting and intake
Welding repair to catalytic convertor heat sheilds
Part head gasket, rocker cover gaskets, replacement timing chain tensioner, exhaust manifold and downpipe gaskets, strut brace, ebc pads

I supplied the cams, followers and eventuri

Total cost for everything 4k. I am still to get the shells replaced at the bottom but I ran out of time before the track event next week :D

Glad you got it back and are happy with the results.

It's a lot of cash to spend but I suppose it's worth it if it's keeper.

Yea, it is. But the cost of the OEM cams / followers was more than the Schricks??!! So as soon as they went I was in for 3k+ minimum, my hand was kinda forced.

4k.... jesus thats a bill.... But comes with the territory sadly if you own a car like this... we will all get get a bill like this at some point!
