Thoughts on this M?

So currently in the hunt for a Z4MC to replace the 2.5i with.

Not too fussy on colours etc, just don't want black outside with black leather as the current one has that and want a change :) Only spec I definitely want is SatNav/Rear park assist.

Few mods planned, mostly CSL's (if not fitted), GruppeM and perhaps an aftermarket exhaust.

Anyway! To the point, found this one for sale in Aberdeen (known to anyone on the forum? I know there is a few guys up in Scotland!)

Now there seems to be a pretty extensive list of mods on there including many I wouldn't care about.. However all the ones I would want to do are already done. Opinions? Worth the premium?

Going to contact the dealer anyway to ask a few questions but it's a long old way from Bristol to just go and have a check over :(

You want rear park assist?! It's the most pointless thing ever on a Z - the seat is about 12" from the rear bumper, you have to have some sort of degenerative brain disease to need it

Just check the CSLs are actually genuine! Personally i'd have them remove the stripy M colours off the front splitter. There is more than one flavour of supersprint exhaust i think and one of them is very loud, so you might want to check

Someone else will be along to pass judgement on the suspension/brakes.

One thing that would sow seeds of doubt for me about the honesty of the dealer is this bit "Never Been Abused or Tracked !!" - there really is no point in upgrading the brakes if you're only ever going to drive it on the road, so i dont believe this for a minute

I though about this one before i bought my 3.0si coupe!

Its in Sheffield but seems too cheap :?

We spoke about this the other week iirc, people were adding up the cost of all the mods and figured it was good value in the end

Haha, I just find it handy on the current one so would like to keep it! It's more of a rather have than not have because.. Why not.

Agree 100% on the decal, that can come off straight away. Looks chavvy to me but that is no more than five minutes to sort.

Loud is fine with me even though it will be a daily.. I don't do huge numbers of miles.

Also agree on the tracked bit, am taking that with a pinch of salt.. You don't mod a car to this degree for road use.

See I know it shouldn't and so many people say "condition > mileage" etc but the 67k totally puts me off. Rather pay a premium and get a lower miler as I intend to keep for at least 3-4 years in which time it will probably see 20k more at least onto it.

Yeah it wasn't as much the cost more like.. Reliability? No idea what a modified cam entails for example, I am completely mechanically inept when it comes to things of that degree.

Brakes hold no interest to me, OEM will be fine for the use I will be giving the car, so removing those and selling would be an option to reduce the cost.. Original budget was £16k haha. Funny how it creeps up as you notice more and more cars!

But I am certainly open to suggestions of other cars, really wanted the one for sale by Ben on here the other day however that seemed to be snapped up in a matter of hours!

@ZermattV - I may take you up on that offer, when a few more things are in place over the next few days and I am in a realistic position to buy one right away it would be nice to have some details on the ones I am looking it.

I stand corrected :)

(You're not missing anything, i have considered unplugging mine as the beeping is irritating and it starts doing it when an object is about 5 feet away).

Agree, drove me mad when I had them reversing up my drive.

I'd estimate that if you bought that for £17.5k then you'd get maybe £1k-£1.5k for the brakes, but you'd then have to find OE brakes to replace them with, and at BMW prices you're looking at over £1k for the disks, pads & calipers. Same goes for the cams & remap - if you remove them (which is not a cheap job anyway) then you've got to put OE ones back in which might cost as much as you make.

Personally I'd negotiate hard and see where it gets you. If you can get it for £17k then I think you've got yourself a bargain. I would have been interested myself, but the cost to change would probably be £7k and I'd prefer to do the mods myself so I know who/what's been done.

I'd also check what your insurance is likely to be, as I can easily insure a modified car on a limited mileage policy, but it's more difficult to find reasonable rates when it becomes a daily driver policy doing 20k+ miles and business use!

BTW, regarding the 'never tracked' comment, my mate has done some tasty upgrades (mainly suspension & Alcon brakes) to his CSL and whilst it's been to the 'Ring once (just to say it's been there), he's not properly tracked it nor is he a boy racer, and only does about 1000 miles a year in it :headbang: Although I'd guess he's the exception that proves the rule.

Looks pretty good value to me, don't know anything about the brakes or suspension, so I'd do a bit of research into those. I would also check whether it *really* has 380mm discs front and rear as that would be effin' massive! And probably overkill on the rear.

As part of the research into the brakes I would also check what pad profile they take, and how much they cost to replace. You don't want to find yourself with brake pads that are either a) very hard to replace; b) very limited choice or c) very expensive.

Fair points all round really, some pointed a few things out I didn't even consider with it.

Insurance for one (completely blanked on this, forgot it would be more after declaring all the mods  ) and the pads for another,

Having done some research it seems Stoptech only made a 355mm set for the Z4M/M3 and the 380mm were for E60 M5s/E63 M6s.

Perhaps it isn't the car for me then all things considered. Ah well, and so the wait continues!

Beautiful car and very good value imo if you wanted to a car to mod in any event.

We discussed it a while back, here is the link:
