Thoughts on refreshing paintwork?

I’m interested to know peoples thoughts on respray work on an old car like the E85.

I sure we’d all like immaculate, original, paint, but I guess as time marches on this becomes more and more difficult to find on older cars.

I read quite a lot of threads where people are having panels sprayed, especially front & rear bumpers and bonnets, so is this just to be expected now.... or would it put you off buying an E85/E86?

I’m not talking about significant accident damage type type repairs after structural damage, but stone chips, bumper scrapes type of respray work.

Interested to hear opinions & thoughts

Personally I would rather have some chips, nicks, scratches (my Z is an 04, gonna have some of those in a 16 year old car) vs a repainted car or even repainted panel(s).

Now if it is in really terrible shape I'd rather see the whole car repainted vs piecemeal bumper covers, door panels etc...But that's just me.

Yes I get that, I’ve seen a few threads where people have gone for a complete respray.... but would you consider a resprayed car... if it was purely for cosmetic ‘newness’ for want of a better expression

It wouldn't be a deal breaker, if everything else screamed "buy me". But...you never know what products were used, the prep taken or the skill of the painter. I've seen cars that looked great when repainted but I have also seen those with tell tale signs of those problems I mentioned. Time will bring out the flaws in a poor repaint.

Agree with above re quality of any paintwork. My initial thoughts are that a owner who has has spent money on paintwork when they didnt really need to (not an mot fail) might also take equal care of mechanical repairs rather than pretend all is good. I guess if you have reciepts for work done / it really looks well finished (painted and unpainted psnels not obviously so) then why not? It is a cost that any buyer will avoid if others have carried that already.

I got mines resprayed at the start of the year, mainly because i got an M rear bumper, but there was peeling clearcoat, stonechips and damaged paintwork i also wanted fixed. Wasn't 100% perfect but a millions times better than before
Edit: would also like to add that I made sure to get plenty of pictures of the process, so if I was ever to sell it on, which I don't plan to, I would at least have something to show the buyer that it was done out of care for the car and not damage repair
