Thoughts on putting M badges on a non M car ?

I’m not a fan of badging something it’s not but feel that bumpers are fine to swap. It’s like having a pre face lift and getting rid of all the amber lenses and swapping to a face lift bumper and tails. Besides going with a M rear bumper gives a great excuse to fit a quad.

Now not to hijack a thread but should I debage the 2.5i and put the ESS badge that I have in its place? Been wondering if I should or keep it sleeper looking.

Sleeper all the way.

M accessories are acceptable, since it’s a genuine product, but enhanced. An M steering wheeel for example.

M badges for the sake of it? Inmy opinion no. But like many others have said it’s your car. Your hobby. Your Pride and joy. Your choice.

Maybe Marlon should start a poll!!

No need to Poll - I can predict the outcome :D

M badges on non-M Zeds:

M badges stuck on the boot or wings etc - acceptable? Yes - 2%. No - 98%
M badges on accessories, for example OEM BMW alloys, ZHP knob, M steering wheel. Yes - 95% No - 5%

Well something like that anyway

Wrong, just wrong.

I was working in St Albans over the past year and seems a higher percentage of offenders there vs other towns.

Even saw a standard mini with a JCW sticker, but on the wrong side of the boot. At least make an effort to get it right :tumbleweed:

I think there is a difference between M cars and M-sport accessories.
My car is an M-sport so it comes with those accessories from the factory.
If anyone wants to put M stickers on their cars, that's up to them.
What I don't get is the aggression you get from a small number of M owners who think just because they own an M they have complete copyright to the badge. Live and let live is what I say!

My Company X3 MSport was brand new last year, I had Sytner take the outside ///M badges off of the body before I drove it away, you can guess my thoughts on ///M badges :P

But none of these owners are ever badging a car as ‘d’ and I bet you’ve not changed the side of your car to read ‘2.5si’

It shows the driver knows enough about the car/badge he aspires to, but can’t afford it. Same camp as people wearing fake watches IMHO.

People should be happy with what they have / can afford. Show me a great condition Z and I appreciate it for what it is. Put M badges on it, when it’s not one & I laugh at it.

If you have an M badge and only 2 exhausts, I will ask where the others are.

Don't ask that! They'll only go off and fit a fake quad exhaust system. 😂
Seriously though it's all the manufacturers fault. Take BMW for example, why they couldnt just could stop with Sport trim like they did on the e85/6. In fact the e85/6 did kinda buck the trend because by 06 most other BMWs has an M Sport trim level, not sure why they treated the zed differently.
Now we've not just got M Sport but M performance on the likes of the M135i etc. WTF.
let's not even get on to the previously mentioned audi s line or merc amg line.

All this brand dilution actually gives those who m badge their run of the mill bmw a slight air of credibility as there usually is a humdrum m sport version of their car out there these days. Previously these folks had no excuse and deserved a public hanging!😂

Mine has M badges on the MV2 wheels and steering wheel which came from the factory (2.5si Sport) and I have recently fitted a ZHP gear knob that also has the M logo....what’s the general consensus on that?

Basically they are the 6 badges I was on about in my post (4 on my 224 alloys, 1 on the ZHP knob and 1 on the M steering wheel) - perfectly acceptable
Have you not got two more than that? Have you not got 2 embossed on your m seats headrests?! :poke:

Agree, I refer to the ‘small M’ on the wings that BMW did themselves as the worst marketing for their higher end sports cars, ever, but good for the masses.

Worked with someone who had an M135i and he stated it was basically an M1, which they never made. Pointed him in the direction of the actual M1 and the 1M. He was also claiming 0-60 about 0.5s faster than reality. Oh and his other car is an X5 3.0d with all the ‘big M’ badges.

There is a 420d I see often on the M4 with so much M Performance kit, I’d be surprised if he couldn’t have got a 330d instead. Perhaps economy was important to him, each to their own.

The 335xd we have has M badges on wings and wheels - just as it left the factory. I’m not embarrassed by them as the performance (to 60mph on paper) is more or less the same as a Z4R :D

Never seen the point in badges, maybe good for the manufacturer to advertise their car, but for the driver what is the benefit? First thing I do when I get a car is take the badges off. Actually probably not true, the first thing I do is remove the rectangle sticker in the rear screen that obscures my vision so the people i bought the car off can get free advertising!

Can't wait to be able to afford a cooper S as a second car so I can take the S badges off and sell them on ebay to someone with a mini first that wants to impress their neighbours :D

OP - you will get blasted by @mbadgewankers on Instagram.

All jokes aside, I go by the below rule of thumb:

If the car is an M or M-Sport which has been debaged, then it is fine to rebadge your missing M badges (as long as authentic badges are used and they are placed correctly).

If the car is a non-M, I would advise not putting on M badges because other BMW drivers will know what you have done and will most probably laugh at you.

At the end of the day, M is a separate line within BMW Group who tune and enhance standard BMWs. If you want the badge, buy an M car [or M-Sport trim if you cannot afford an M].

IMO - quads should only be fitted to M cars.

(It would be embarrassing to pull up at a traffic light after installing quad exhausts and get smoked by a remapped Golf GTI.)
