Thoughts on part ex..

Hi.

I've recently put my e85 on here for sale. It's 2003 2.5i with 59,000 on the clock, a hard top, and overall a decent example.

I'm looking at a trade in on a 2009 plate 335i SE coupe, great condition, special order colour, and fully spec'd (apart from the BMW sat nav system). 38,000 on the clock.

A main dealer is offering me the 3 series for 10k plus my Z4, this includes a few extras such as seal and protect, bmw shortfall, 1 year warranty, mot, etc

Any thoughts previous experience with main dealer from fellow members at all?

Both cars are HPI clear.

That doesn't seem like a good deal to me. Like above, how much do they want for the 335? A fired of mine has a 335, with sat nav and a few more miles (not much though if I remember correctly) and he got it for about 12 or 13 I think. You'd get more for your call selling privately and I would also agree that its probably better selling the hard top separately.
 
The 335 is up for £14,995. I did say the Z4 had a hardtop when they done the valuation. I don't know if I could be sneaky and deliver my car without the hardtop on?

The deal is part financed on a hire purchase deal not PCP, so the additional 10k would include APR.

Love the 335 on offer its the spec I'm after and they are becoming more rare with lower miles so I'm very tempted..

You asked about warranty.

I bought my 2008 3.0si and part ex'd my 2.0i Sport - the 3.0si came with a 12 month BMW warranty. Even though I bought the Zed in Warrington, Lloyd of Newcastle have had it in twice for work - two new rear speakers fitted, one coil pack, new front wishbones and (believe it or not) a completely new roof as the rear demister top wires stopped functioning. Although 200 miles away, Lloyd have been superb in their dealings with me considering the Zed wasn't even purchased from them. I wanted to buy from BMW for the warranty and I've found it excellent. (Runs out in two weeks though!) I paid only slightly more for my Zed (I was very pleased with the deal - new foglamps, wheels refurbed and tyres swopped over from my original Zed, all part of the deal).

Can you not agree to the same trade without the hardtop and then sell the hardtop on here - a main dealer is likely just to put the car through auction so they won't even see it in the deal .
 
Do a px valuation on both cars and see what the difference is. My guess is they stand to make at least £3-4k out of the deal. Then you know how much you can squeeze out of them. Nobody ever wins with a px a private sale will always yield a better reward BUT if this is the only coupe for you (which I doubt) then do as good a deal as you can and get it. You only live once .. however there are thousands of 3 series coupe's around im sure you could find another one easily.

Waltz up to the dealer selling the 335 at £14995 & offer him £13500 , he may take it & worse case you settle at £14k max
That leaves you with at least £1000 in your pocket :wink:
 
Just seen the 3 series Coupe in question, its a unique colour combination and a 335i isnt going to shift quickly this time of year. Also it seems as though it may have been reduced already? (Hard to shift). If so you definitely have way more bargaining power. I managed to get a further £1500 off the sticker price on my zed when I purchased it in the Winter of 2011/2012. If you must PX go in with your bottom line in mind (dont tell them it unless you get to a sticking point) and see what they will do for you.

Cap value of that car (taking into consideration mileage and extras) is £10,750 - £11,450 (Clean trade in) so they wont have paid a penny over £12k for it.

Same trade in on yours is £3,500 - £3,725 (without considering mods). So if yours is worth around £5k privately and theirs worth £14k cash value your cost to change should be around £9k. Thats the deal I'd be looking to take and push as close to it as possible before signing the dotted line.

This is exactly my reasoning for going to a dealership and paying a little bit more, it's a nice security to have, especially if you are particular about the workings of the car.
The deal does include a 1 year warranty but I'm pushing for two!

I see your point Mr wilks however I am not in that position as I am looking to finance the car. You are right though.

Plus I don't want to loose the 335; it has a specific spec I was looking for and as I say they are not readily available with low miles and the credentials I am after.

I'm working on it although I don't think I can achieve the 9k mark.

From what I understand the dealer will have a cap on how much profit he can loose, they are providing a service and will be looking to do more than break even, it is BMW after all!

I'll let you know how I get on after the weekend, I am trying it on as much as possible..!

Dealers want to finance so that puts you in a strong position. Mr wilks is still right though, as it will be 1k less to finance, so in effect still in your pocket.

Try and get the cost to change down to 9k. Try for 2 year warranty but don't push for things that aren't important like the snake oil.
