Thoughts on 'one-brand' detailing kits?

I'd like to start using higher quality products for my Z4 but am not really sure where to start. Obviously everyone has their preference and that makes research online even more confusing. It seems most people use a combination of brands but I wanted to get your thoughts on using just one brand. The ones that have stayed in my mind through all this reading are Autoglym, Dodo Juice and Poorboy's. They all seem to have a full line of products yet I don't think I've seen anyone using just one brand - why not?

Is the general consensus just that some products are better than others from the different lines? Or has reading so many opinions just caused people to try and pick the best brand in each category?

To make matters worse, my Z4 is black so I've seen specific products (Poorboy's Black Hole, for instance) recommended for darker cars.

I think it may be that some brands do some things better than others, If you want to go with one brand AutoFinesse seem to be well thought of.

I use a mix of Autogylm and Meguiars personally, as eleflo says some brands do some things better than others. I'm a big fan of autogylms ultra deep shine polish, but find a better result with Meguiars wax. Likewise I just use carplan demon wash shampoo because it's cheap and cheerful but does a great job and I don't think you need an expensive shampoo for washing initially.

i found that different ones do things better. i like the poorboys products. auto glym seemed to be all price and do nothing much but i do like their hood cleaner/proofer you can see a big difference to the water on it.

also i used a megures quick detailer on a different car that was unpolished and it came up a treat.

perfectly cleaned are a good site to use

Going with one brand is always going to be a compromise.

Just depends on what you want... the "best" for each stage for you, or for the products to look nice all lined up.

Be very careful... especically with a lot of the UK Fan Boi stuff... most of it is nothing but rebranded products with horrific markups.

Look at either car chem or angelwax as these 2 companies make the stuff for most of the others...

Another good company is Autosmart - they make their own stuff too.

Thanks for the input guys. I'm over in the US so I'll have to buy a lot of these online - so I want to get it right the first time.

The term I use for a lot of the smaller UK based detailing suppliers that there fans would buy the s**te off them without any thought to:

a) who actually makes it.
B) is it any better than what's out at the moment.

Some of the people sicken me with their "oooh I'll buy the new thing" without a clue about it...

These same fans jump to the defence of said companies and forcefully put points across that are wrong at best... they will not hear a word against them.

I'm not sure if the fan bois know or even care they are getting lied to and ripped off.... which makes it worse IMO... spouting and defending thinsg when you don't understand the truth.

chjade84 the poorboy' stuff comes from America so you should be able to get it there.

cueball i thought that's what you meant. but each to their own.

For a start I think Auto Glym is very good, I think its underrated as a starter product. Got some good results with it too, SRP and EGP are good products to use with hand. I still use some of their stuff, shampoo, glass polish, interior shampoo (gives lovely egg shell finish on interior plastics)
Meguiars professional if your going down the polisher route if you want to stick to one brand.
Saying that I've not got that much experience of machine polishing having only switched over a month ago!
I think that most people into detailing find it addictive searching for "better" products, therefore will try a lot of stuff. When we find something that we like we stick with it, hence using products from loads of different manufacturers. My favourite discovery this year is Iron X, will be tough to stop using it.

Well I've ordered Autoglum HD wax since it was well reviewed and comes with some, apparently quite nice, towels and applicators - as well as their wheel cleaner (hope it works like in the youtube videos!) and Poorboy's Black Hole polish. I've also got some nice 3M buffing pads coming for the DA.

We will see how they work whenever they arrive next week!

Thanks again!

if you're going to the trouble of using the black hole then i would clay it as well. the car will look super after

Thinking of ordering for my first clay/detailing attempt...any opinions or better recommendations around similar price?

The first clay kit I used was the meguiars smooth surface kit. Very similar to AG one but I prefer the smell of the megs quick detailer.

I've started buying more Poorboys stuff. Not because I want a one brand detailing kit, but because its good value for money and there's plenty in stock at my local car store.

Even the Poorboys quick detailer has the usual bubble gum smell. Love it :D
