Thoughts on exhaust options for 3.0Si

One for the future this really, as I don't have the cash to pursue right now, but what is everyone's thoughts on the exhaust system on the 3.0Si, and how to improve it (in terms of sound).

I've had fairly poor results in the past from trying to enhance the exhaust noise on other cars, and felt that it has spoiled the overall noise (droney, drowned out the induction noise etc).

I do quite like that the 3.0Si (Coupe FWIW) can be a quiet and chilled out companion when you aren't in the mood for shenanigans. I also quite like the howl it gives at high revs (with one of the foams removed, never actually tried it with it back in).

However, I do feel that it is a bit quiet for a sports car. I'm sure even my E36/46 328 with the Golf Tee-mod was noticeably louder/bassier. It's kinda disappointing for such a car. It would be nice for it to have a bit more of a voice. Compared to my old 350Z with Cobra Exhaust and Injen induction kit, it is literally as quiet as a mouse.

So I've done a bit of research, and come to the following conclusions to the various options:-

Backbox delete - sounds very good, but is very loud and drones (don't want drone). Allegedly loses power (definitely do NOT want)

Secondary cat delete - quieter than the above, but better than standard; likely to fail MOT (at least visual) - CBA swapping things back and forth.

Backbox bypass - appears to be two pipes welded to bypass the backbox. Unsure of how this would work really

Cat-back system - seem to be few and far between for the 3.0Si and very expensive in many cases

Standard BMW system - seems to be pretty well set up for the car, hence other options often losing power... but its just a bit too quiet for my tastes.

I keep looking at the options, and thinking that on balance, despite the quiet sound, standard is still probably best?

Any thoughts?

Bypass would probably give you what you want with no impact on performance, it just allows some sound to avoid the silencer.

I've been considering this myself, I don't want a boy racer racket but instead of the sound generator (utter nonsense) I would like to hear the six cylinder singing a bit more, it's one of my favourite engine sounds!

Before you send money getting them cut out/bypassed, the si engine doesn't have secondary cats-they are situated in the manifolds

Anyone dealt with these guys?

Don't want to hack the standard box about so a replacement such as this is a more attractive proposition for me?

Sorry I cannot help you much, but FWIW a previous owner had the centre and rear sections on my current one replaced with stainless items and it sounds much better like that. But sadly I can't identify who made them. :(

It is significantly more vocal under load so you hear exhaust more than induction but it doesn't drone at a cruise, and you get a few pops on the over-run. To me it's more like how it should have been to start with!

Now I keep looking for bridges so I can get the windows down!

isn't the whole standard exhaust stainless steel?

After quite a few months of deliberation and listening to loads of videos and reading a lot of posts I decided the bypass was the best option. Cheapest too.

Very interesting thread.

Im thinking wich best option:

Bypass:

Or... refurbish the internal pipes:

What is the best option?

Hi, I should think the bypass pipes would be the more subtle option out of the two-cutting open the rear box & joining the two ends together must be very similar to removing the box entirely?

When I had my 3.0Si I looked into this and decided off the shelf Remus was best for sound and price.

Not sure now as Scorpion and BCS would be options to look at, but it depends on budget.

Bypass pipes are a great option if you want to keep the existing back boxes and just want a little more drama at a relatively low cost.

No, it's not at all. Pipes are fitted between the inlet and outlet, BUT parts of the perforated sections are left in place, as well as the sound insulation, this means you get more noise, but without the boominess. They can be tailored to be noisier, or quiter than the one I have done and fitted to mine...

A backbox delete, IMHO sounds like your exhaust has fallen off, and they drone like mad..

This is what mine sounds like [ref]0xid0[/ref],

Thanks for the comments. Mike I might be interested in your upgrade, not straight away as am busy moving homes, but if I keep the Zed a while (which I think I will) then I'll be interested in making it a little bit more vocal :)

Just out of interest though how much is the Remus option, I quickly googled the other night and it doesn't seem cheap?

I had the rear box sleaved on my Chimaera simular to the mod above made it sound much better, Some people used to just by pass the box witch made it sound like a tractor
Anyway sorry for going off topic carry on
