Thoughts on dash change

I am not a massive fan of the satnav we have in our cars, mine is the none DSP, 6 speaker setup. I was wondering if I was to change to a none satnav dash would I need to change the amp and headunit or could I keep the existing setup. I know many will say it will devalue the car as it won’t be OEM etc etc. This is just a question looking at the implications and pitfalls of doing it.

Dunno, I have the HiFi 10 speaker setup without satnav (lucky me), so whatever stereo setup seems indepenent to the satnav systems?

You can't really run the satnav oem head unit without the screen as you would have no way of selecting the various options. There is no amp to worry about in the 6 speaker systems though so that's one less complication.

If you just wanted to get rid of the screen on the dash you would have to fit a head unit designed for a non-satnav equipped Z4 (of which you will find lots of on the second user market). Or just fit your own aftermarket jobbie.

Personally I wouldn't touch a Z4M with satnav. It was already antiquated in 2006 when the car came out. But this can be solved...

1) purchase non-satnav head unit on Ebay or elsewhere, readily available on the cheap
2) code the car to accept the different head unit (if even necessary - not sure)
3) cut small piece of thin steel to cover gaping hole - secure it in place
4) head to local upholsterer, have entire dash covered in leather - boom, problem solved, and much nicer dash material comes as a bonus

I love the old skool feel of the screen and nav it's part of the car from that era 8)

If want up to date buy a modern car with fancy screens all over?

You'll just need a OEM Business head unit and disconnect the Nav computer so not to confuse the car.

If you can remove the wiring and components there will be a few people willing to buy going on recent history.

+1 also probably the coolest integration of a first gen technology. Don’t know why it offends so many people.

I find it useful not for the nav but for general use, mpg, dsp etc I also think it looks cool.

Everyone that’s been in the car has said they like the flip up screen

My MC came with Sat Nav and like tomscott says I quite like the extra functionality it gives - even if the Nav part is very dated!

And to me it looks much better than modern ones that just have a tablet hanging off the dash.

It's just so useful for the various menus / settings / media / radio / mp3 info.

It's tidy and out of the way when you don't need it.

Wouldn’t even bother mate, the satnav system is s**t. Was a good extra when new but now the model is hurtling toward classic car status..,.... it’s another thing to go wrong. Just like an automatic gearbox.

the satnav is the satnav, the sound system is the sound system.
the audio from the satnav go to sound system, nothing more.

The dsp 10 speaker sound system doesn't sound good at all, word of a mix, live and studio, sound engineer

we are lucky that there is THE engine
