Thoughts From First 24 Hours of Ownership

Hey everyone.

Just picked up a 2005 3.0i 6-speed Z4 last night. Silver exterior, black interior with 100,000 on the clock.

I did a fair amount of lurking before pulling the trigger and I actually hadn't sat in one until I did the test drive and ultimately, drove six hours home last night. Here's some thoughts:

-the cabin is HUGE. I'm 6'5, 220 lbs so my biggest fear was not fitting or the cabin becoming uncomfortable after an hour but this is not the case. I would actually say I could be an inch or two taller and still be just fine. I also have 3+ inches until my head hits the soft top.

-the suspension is rough, but not that rough. I had a 2005 Corvette and a 1997 M3 before. The M3 was probably a little softer or maybe just more "refined" but the Corvette was comparable. The Z4 suspension might be a little tougher than those other two cars mentioned but reading some of the posts on here I figured my back was going to hurt when I got out.

-I hope it's not just a "feature" of the suspension setup but the car is terrifying to drive right now. Per the PPI, all four shocks are done and I think the RTAB on the back right corner is gone also. Sometimes when I went over bumps, road deformities, manhole covers etc. (highway speed or even 30 MPH) the back end would kick out a little to the right and it felt like the back right wheel moved laterally to the outside of the car. I never lost control or anything but I've never ever been in a car that felt like this. This felt different from bump steer since I normally think of bump steer as occurring when the car is at a minimum, being pushed somewhat hard in the corners. This would happen on straights as well.
This was terrible for inspiring confidence but the worst part was, it didn't do it every single time I went over a bump or even when I went over a bump while cornering. Also this wasn't aggressive driving at all, just normal city and highway driving, all at speeds of 70 MPH or less.

You may want to check if you have the run flat tyres fitted an either get more modern ones or get rid an swap to normal tyres
If already on normal tyres then definitely go through the suspension

Sounds like a collapsed rear trailing arm bush. Could switch out for some m3 lower control arms at the same time, then get a geo done

NEWSFLASH
15yr old Bmw sports car with 100k on clock doesn't drive like new  :P

Welcome to the forum tjs , whatever the issue there are many many others who have gone before you & all you need to know is within this forum .
Once you get on top of it you should have yourself a great straight 6 roadster :driving:

Seems like just the basics of a 15yr old car ,whatever the make will do if nothing had been changed. I guess you did your researched and factored that into the buying price ?
Either way, welcome to the land of tinkering and knowledge of how to do's and where to buy better things.

Yeah I definitely factored the known repairs into the purchase price. I actually didn’t notice the slop until I was driving it home. It’s really only noticeable on the highways where there are bridges or as I mentioned when going slower on poor pavement. The bushings can can be done while they’re in there for the shocks anyway so it’s not bad.

Welcome to the forum anyway.

Still it sounds like you are pleased with your Z4 despite the issues you have highlighted.

Hopefully you can get them sorted fairly easily, and don't forget to post some photos because we do like to see them on here!

Sounds just like my drive home 3 years ago when I bought mine, lol. Enjoy the upgrades :D

Definitely throw the standard suspension and run flats far far far away, these cars IMHO drive like dog s**t with the OEM suspension and horrible run flats. My cousin has a 2007 2.0l z4, run flats and factory suspension, its so un-comfy, finds every nook and cranny in the road and steers wildly on back roads which is really quite dangerous.

I bought mine with Proxies and firestone non run flats and STANCE+ coil overs and it drives like a dream! :D

Hope you sort it and enjoy the Z4 experience, once you have it right for you you will love driving it through the lanes with TCC off ;)
