Thought I'd Cracked it, but not quite......

Cruise Control

As we all know retrofitting Cruise Control to an ///M at present it a black art with only a handful of Indi's who have done it. Anyway after another CC thread on here I decided to have another look so spent one Saturday afternoon scouring the web. As you can imagine information is lacking so I started to look at other S54 powered cars. There are two that I know of, the Z3 and M3.

The issue with both of these is that they all came with cruise from the factory. However a few Z3's were produced where CC was missed and BMW had to issue retrofit instructions which I found. A look through and they were no help as no reference was made to connecting to the DME. I can only conclude this part of the loom was already in the cars.

So I turned my attention to the M3 where I hit gold (so I thought). The CSL and the CS (ZCP) were produced without the MFSW and just had M-track button. Now our yank friends had worked out the this button could easily be relocated and a standard MFSW panel could be used. Therfore CC and MFSW functions could be installed. I found two good forum threads, very detailed including which pin on the DME needed connecting to, result (so I thought). It was as easy as fitting to a M54 Z4.

So today I thought I would have a go. Now I thought I would start with the DME just in case pin 27 already had a connection. I'm glad I did as the problem soon became apparent. There was no 40 pin connector :headbang: I took the DME upstairs and started googling. The problem soon became apparent. For some reason or other BMW use a MSS70 DME and not a MSS54 DME :headbang:

I am of the belief though that there is just one connection required at the DME to get cruise working. I just need to find out which PIN :headbang:

There are two oprions as I see it. The first which I have done is send a couple of email to tuning companies that work with the DME to see if they can tell me which pin it is. The other option and this might be the easiest is to get hold of a car with CC (Hello Bing :D ) and find the extra wire.

On a happier not my next job went OK, that will be on another thread.

yup we have a much more advanced DME closely related to that of the s65 /s85. Hence why the z4m is notoriously difficult to tune for in FI terms. Good luck and keep digging this is something i REALLY REALLY want this in my car!! Such a useful feature. When buying something new this is one thing i deem essential now-days.

I will do some digging on those then.

Wonder if Stevie knows on his S85

I would put money on the pins being the same if the connections are the same size.

You can have look at mine in Wales if we get a mo. Otherwise I'm heading down to Rye early on Sunday, maybe with Jan :D

Rye...what time?

9:00 by the looks :poke:

Are we invited then Bing?

I suppose so :D

We were just going to head down, have breakfast then a bimble round camber and back, but I'm not sure if Jan can do it as late as 9 as he's got to be home for 10. But I can stretch a bit - isn't Beachy head miles away from Rye though ?

Steve, I had CC retrofitted by Phil Crouch at CPC Perfornance Engineering in Amersham. I just bought the stalk and cowl, and he spliced it into the existing loom. Labour wasn't much, so it cost little more than the price of the bits.
If I ever escape work, you're welcome to have a look to see how he did it.

Sounds like a date. Let's say between 8.30am and 9 at the car park opposite the strand quay cafe in Rye. Don't forget change for the parking. I have no idea where we'll go after, if anywhere, but it'll be great to catch up

I'll see if Jan can hang out long enough for a cuppa and a natter.

Shall we tell PVR ? Not sure his car is allowed out to play yet...
