Bit of a nostalgic post this....

The talk of change to wintry weather today made me remember that this weekend used to be the start of the Lombard RAC Rally usually with the first flurries of snow in Grizedale.

Being a certain age this meant some late night waiting up to watch Rally Report on BBC2 .... cue that music.... (Propaganda Duel.. i have since found out).... and the William Woolard..

In 1991 (20 years ago gulp) I got invited through a pretty random means to marshall at Chester for the overnight stop of the Rally.... and was very lucky to be put on Parc Ferme duties in the Hotel car park in chester this meant directing drivings to their alloted car parking bay.

I have been rarely totally awestruck but directing Juha Kankkunen into his parking bay and Carlos Sainz was a pretty special moment.

other memories of the night were seeing a very young Colin Macrae come in in the Rothmans Subaru Legacy and Malcom Wilson in the Q8 sierra cosworth.

I'm sure i'm not alone in having some special memories of this event as it toured the country ..... wish they'd bring it back in its old form....

lets hear your Lombard RAC stories..... :driving:

I remember watching the rally go through Sutton Park 30 years ago, and then getting a lesson on left foot braking in a Seirra Cosworth from Penti Aricala 10 years later. We went through a roundabout at 100 mph , and he steered with one hand while chatting about the weather.Awesome.

In 1967 you used to be able to take your car into the forest sections. After all the rally cars had gone through you were able to take to the track.I remember borrowing my Dads ARMSTRONG SIDDLEY to go and taking that through the forest was some experience.

Great post.

I remember the Sutton Park stage ( I now live right by the park!). Tony Pond in the TR7 (or was it a Tr8?).

Excellent. Wish they would bring it back too!

Weekend, pah. I can remember when it lasted 2 weeks and we'd all stand by thr fence at school and watch them drive past between stages.

I too remember the sutton park stage :D

have some (probably cr*p) photos somewhere from the pre-digital age.

Awesome memories, and yes sometimes in the snow :D

if you have 10 spare minutes well worth a look.... Sutton park features ...
about 8 years before my first memories ... this is worth watching for the scene of roger turning up to meet his service crew in a country lane who are cooking sausages in the back of the zephyr/zodiac estate.

The bizarre thing is that i got thinking about the night i spent at the Parc Ferme whilst flying back from holland on thursday night.... to be honest couldn't remember the exact year or date ... turned out to be 24th November 1991 - thursday was 24th November 2011... twenty years later ...spooky...
