This makes me sad, and a little mad

The Defender isn't competitive as a military vehicle and there have been plans for a modern Defender for a while I believe. It is convenient to blame legislation rather than a car that is too dated for mass market appeal

Emissions? Sounds like an excuse to rest the badge for a bit, then a couple of years later (and a less err....nostalgic body) the shiny 'New' mainstream defender is released.

Inevitable, but a pants reason. Love our 6 cylinder zeds while they last :(

Shame. Anyone see the video of the Defender vs the Dodge Ram? Tug of war contest. The landy won it

Ironically since demand from the rural community will remain high I understand they will in fact continue to make them outside of Europe and bring them in as kits which avoids certain legislation. They can then carry on the Defender while also making a new model in the UK.

Yes i did catch that, guessing the dodge was RWD? Poor clutches is what I was thinking when I saw it haha.

I agree the defender has legendary status imo...I suppose they can make more money making Evoques though in this fashion conscious day & age.

Defender prob go to India
New dc100 likely to replace.
And yes I would agree it's all about how much money jlr can make. Obviously rr & rrs are biggest profit margins.
But I think the évoque generates most revenue because of production volumes.
However I believe the range rover & sport are being produced in similar numbers to evoque at the moment.

thats interesting - arent they built and rebranded in spain ? it used ot be called the santana

Although slightly sadened by this news I am also slightly happy as my 2002 CSW, which is worth obscene amounts of money now, will be worth even more when production has been finished for a couple of years :)

They did indeed use to build them in Spain from kits and called them Santana.

Stopped back in the 90's, but funny enough they were better than the UK models for years as they ended up developing the car while the UK industry was in such a mess.

The news could start another spate of this!

Unless you keep it indoors and don't use it surely most of the bodywork and chassis will have evaporated into a small cloud of brown dust in a few years. It already must be one the oldest around :D

Oi, cheeky bugger

Something like 75% of all Defenders ever built are still on the road. A little bit of TLC and a few gallons of Dinitrol every couple of years and these things will last for ever.
