This light keeps going on and off

Thats the oil level light. When does it come on off? If it comes on briefly upon shutdown of the engine that means your oil level is close to minimum. Depending on when the oil light comes on it can mean various things (I think 4 different meanings). If I had my owners manual here I'd tell you what everything else means. The owners manual provides a good breakdown of that light and meanings.

I'm sure someone else will chime in as well.
If you race the engine alot (take it to around 6 grand rpm) then the car tends to drink oil a bit (voice of experience :D )

*edit* I also recommend manually checking your oil via the dipstick too. Don't totally rely on those handy sensors.

The light comes on at various times. I do race the engine a lot. I would say after driving for 5 minutes then it usually turns on and stays on.

I have the extended warranty. The dealership charges me $50.00 (U.S.) to look at the car and then if it is covered under warranty they fix it for free.

I know that oil changes and things like that are covered so what should I do? I don't have the time, tools or want to learn how to change my oil but I would be willing to get some oil and top it off if needed.

Or do I just take it to the dealer, get their rental BMW, and then have them fix it.

Hmm I can't find my manual atm to check it. I would manually check the oil first before dropping 50 bucks to find out it probably just needs a top off. One quart of oil will raise the level from the minimum mark on the dipstick to the max line.

Castrol Edge or anything as long as it is BMW Longlife-01 compliant... do a search there are loads of posts about oil....

yeah, just get some oil, top it up, then you're sorted... these things DRINK oil like I drink red wine!! <hic!>

Hi Jeff,

Oil warning lights are one thing (along with coolant temp) to take care of really quick. As you say you 'race' the engine a lot, so low oil could do some serious damage and it won't be covered by any warranty. Oil as with water and coolant, tyres pressures, etc. are consumer items that you're really expected to deal with yourself on an as needed basis.

Funny enough my oil light came on this morning when i switched the engine off, it came up with a yellow oil light briefly, which I take to mean the oil needs topping up, will check it shortly when it has cooled.

My car does not drink that much oil.

Well I checked the oil level in my Z4MC for the first time  last week. Now with 8,500 miles on the clock and the last time the oil was changed was at the 1200 mile service. Hasn't drunk a drop, and I do try to explore the rev limiter at every opportunity once warmed up.

I'm sure I read somewhere on here that the engine should be warm when checking oil? :?
