christ...on...a....bike!
that's 20 sec off my PB and I was in an Ariel Atom2!
took karussel and flugplatz nicely.
reckon he could have shaved 10 sec more without traffic.
impressed.

Thanks OP!

I think he knows his way around there - brilliant!

Impressive, but he's a bit of a knob really. Sounding his horn at the corvette at the beginning and all over the rear of the M3 on a bend. Where does he expect it to go?

one of the golden rules at the ring is to always be checking ur mirrors.
even if u think ur the fastest man on the track there will ALWAYS be something faster coming up behind u. corvette wasnt checking his mirrors well enough imo.
blue m3 he thanked for making space.
fair play

Agreed, but seriously, what does sounding the horn do? Apart from distract the M2 driver?

He's lucky he had next to no traffic. I've seen video's where it's swarmed with cars all over the place.

it's easy to get frustrated when ur on a hot lap. i reckon i could have always gone faster without traffic obviously.
corvettes are only good in drag races anyway. no good for twisty tracks.
best time to get a fast lap is really early in the morning, tagged onto the end of the manufacturer test sessions. relatively quiet and the air is denser at that time of the day too - more oxygen = better engine performance = slightly better times.

He's on a track day, mirror rule doesn't apply like it would on a TF day.

Er, sorry, but i beg to differ. Mirror rule applies whatever the event; trackday, touristfarten, testing session or 24hr adac! It's common courtesy but more to do with safety, and even more so in a competitive scenario!
Ive been going there over 10 years now my friend - you get to know what the score is over that time

Thanks for sharing Stevo, maybe a couple of seconds lost due to traffic - but overall had a nice quiet track :driving:

10 years, wow, you must really know the place well. Good for you.

Trackdays and competitive events the responsibility of overtaking sits with the overtaker, it's up to you to find a safe way past. I agree that on a trackday it's courtesy to try and let faster traffic past, but not at the cost of your own lap.

True, but in a competitive setting it comes down to who has 'ownership' of the racing line during an overtake.
Clearly the M2 was faster and even though behind the vette, was closing on the bend on the correct racing line. The vette looked like he was drifting back onto the racing line, either deliberately 'closing the door' or didnt see the M2. Either way, i'd have been a bit angry if it was me.
All in the translation and individual driving style though i suppose.
I've never raced so I'm not speaking from racing experience but it doesnt take much to get clued up and play by the unwritten rules.
Maybe I'm too courteous (uncompetitive) a driver.....

Was a good lap though by the M2, enjoyed the video.

Chris, Is it just the Atom you go to the Ring with, they're a proper bit of kit and extremely capable. Have seen a few over there and they look pretty trick, but more a car for once there rather than driving it there.

Cheers

Top driving.

Reminds of one of my favourite 'ring videos - 991 GT3 plus a rather nice Patek to boot.

No, sadly we gave it up and sold it last year.
We thought it would be more cost-efficient to share between three of us but it wasn't really and ultimately we decided that it had been fun for the last 4 years but justifying an average 5-6000 Euros each per season was becoming harder.
Used to be that you could buy a season pass and share it between your mates but when they brought in photo ID @ Eur1500 our overall costs obviously shot up.
Fuel and tyres were the greatest expense and we used to actually have it road-registered so that we could drive instead of towing it there. We sacked that off as insurance costs and sheer discomfort were too great. Turning up for the weekend cold and wet if we got caught in the rain was usually a precursor to a grumpy overall experience.
Before the Atom, I used to take my E46 M3 and and ended up totalling it coming off Karussel. Going in is easy, holding a line is easy, if a bit bumpy, but coming out and it was always 50/50 if it would flip you out or let you go gently. The trick is not to steer out of the bend but hold your line straight until back on camber but I got caught out, panicked, spun and that was that. Whole left side of the car trashed by the armco on the opposite side and a bill for 8m replaced armco, track inspection, closure and the recovery truck.
Suffice to say, I abstained from the ring for the next couple of years and forwent some nice holidays in order to pauy off the bills.
You'd think I'd have had my fingers well and truly burnt by that time but the opportunity came up to grab the Atom along with 2 co-investors. The rest, as they say, is history!
Would totally recommend to anyone thinking about going down there. But ffs buy an old cheap golf gti with good suspension and tyres first, learn your craft and get trackday insurance!
I've taken up (bike) road racing these days. Cheaper, exhilarating at speed, just as dangerous and fringe benefits of losing weight month on month.

Mmmmm.....The Nurburgring certainly is an expensive and addictive hobby and quite savage financially once you add in a Ring track car. What starts as a bit of fun soon becomes more and more serious and an increasingly empty wallet.

Crashing there, not good and a harsh lesson, especially with the added financial impact of the track damage and closure. Still, you're here to tell the tale, so thankfully no real damage. A bloke I know wrote off a 360 Ferrari at the Kleines Karussell and also got hit with a 5k bill for track closure and damage.

The motorbike thing appeals to me more, that was what drew me to visiting the Nurburgring for the first time back in 1993 for a few clueless laps and then numerous times a year from 1997 to the current day, although these days my bike laps are rare and very steady. Have seen too many bike crashes, including mates, on fluid spills to risk riding it at any real pace anymore.

For the past 15 years I've been spending more time there in various cars, including the Z4, however it's so busy now, it's not so much fun with the amount of queuing and hanging about due to frequent track closures. I try to choose quieter mid week evening sessions or late October weekends.

Cheers

I've watched it again. What a nutter!
He is wearing shorts. I'm guessing no wife and kids.
I've never driven the 'Ring but I think he's mostly one gear above where I imagine I would be if I were any good at driving (certainly one more than our friend at DutchRingRacing - my fave Youtuber in a Z4MC).
Hassling the crap out of allcomers, granted, but nothing comes past him and he must have some trick mirrors because everything absolutely disappears in his mirrors! I don't pretend to know 'Ring etiquette but this is just scary :driving:
Legend or loon?
M2 beckons - not for me, though! Best leave this to the pros!

Yes, it's more popular there now than it's ever been!
There are definitely 'good' times to go and i prefer as early in the morning as possible esp if theres no morning dew hanging around.
I was originally inspired by a video of Hans Stuck doing a blinding lap of the VLN circuit in his M3GTR. I just had to get an M3 and get down there after watching it literally hundreds of times!

Great to see there's an updated version with him making a commentary, but the original vid is truly mesmerising. The transmission whine, the explosive downshits and violent suspension impacts as well as his sheer driving skills are just hypnotic ...

If u think M2 guy is a nutter, watch the Hans Stuck vid. Then reappraise your opinion of M2 guy. He's a girl in comparison. Lol
