Got a new third brake light ready to fit on the weekend. I have the standard (bigger) springs. I know of the issues with these but does it happen every time? My original lamp has no cracks so is it just a case of them being too tight in some cases? I'm wondering if I should get a set of smaller springs just to be on the safe side.

Cut them down, that's what I did 
Do they still pull in the edges enough?

Yep fits perfect with them cut down.... If you want I can take a pic of mine in situ
