Thinking of selling due to roof problem

Well it supposed to be a smart charger and I’ve selected “AGM” in it but frankly was surprised how cheap it was ;)

I’ll try and put a picture up when I’ve worked out how to as she is mint ;)

Its unusual to have cheap smart chargers that can run at 8 amps but I believe you..

As others have said, on E89s batteries that have run flat, even then when charged can wreak havoc/cause weird faults all over the car.

ALWAYS operate the roof with the engine running if you are in any doubt to the integrity /state of the battery..its happned to me too!

If the battery is showing 12v again after it’s been charged then it sounds like it needs replacing, get a. new one fitted, register it to the car and go for a decent drive, then try the roof again, when you are charging the battery you also need to charge via the charging points under the bonnet, not directly on the battery.

I’m clearly out my depth ;)

“Use the charge points under the bonnet, not the battery”?

And

“Register the new battery to the car”??

I need to do some googling!

Bit more on the battery: inevitably went flat during lockdown. Like, really flat. At least I realised it was an AGM so bought a supposed “smart charger”. Charges it up (it was taking 20 or more amps at start, before railing off eventually to zero). Car started great, no roof issues. Some time later roof warning light came on and I recharged. Seemed ok and car has been driven around a bit more frequently since. Then the roof light starts coming on a bit, I jumped on here this am and the. Put it back in charge (around 9am) and it’s still taking 8.6amps - all times charged at the battery, not under the bonnet. Maybe I killed the battery in lockdown. Hopefully I don’t have a roof problem. Fingers crossed ;)

Battery 4 years old and gone completely flat usually means it was killed due to that.

Under the bonnet is the positive charge point (with a red flap over it) and somewhere in the area, a big bolt as the negative point. Charge through there as it will go through a voltage regulator.

I would invest in the new battery first as that can avoid a lot of additional costs, perhaps not now but soon as the battery will be on its last legs at best anyway.

Thanks everyone - what a mine of information populated by really helpful folk ;)

I’m now feeling slightly silly for my hissy fit of shall I sell the car ;)) (I’ll say it before anyone else does!)

Yes, but then joining the forum and having a good vent seems to have worked. So we can all feel smug again

No,no ... don't listen to him. Sell it to me for scrap value

Its worth being aware that the car engine running alone i.e. sat on your drive, does not fully charge the battery, it reaches an optimum level and charging ceases with the alternator being disconnected from the engine to improve fuel economy/performance (allegedly).
The car then re-engages the alternator when you are running downhill not using the engine (over run) so you get charging for nothing, its called a regeneration system I believe..

Go get yourself full cover with Warranty Direct, better cover than BMW.
I paid £1100 for three years cover on a 24k 35i a year ago and they are absolutely excellent. Already had a DCT sump pan, all filters, oil and reset at nearly £600, I paid £50 no questions asked...

Anything mechanical/electrical can be fixed.

DONT LET IT WIN :D :D :D

Around a year ago after buying my Z4 and sticking my nose into this forum for the first time I read a lot of posts about replacing batteries at the first signs of concern. Meh...at the outset, I wasn't convinced. I figured I had a bit of experience of flat batteries and a few tricks of my own to deal with them. However, I'm thankful that I got the message BEFORE it caused a bigger issue that this car is a bit different to many and you really don't want to try to get the last bit of life out of a failing battery. Loads of stuff on this forum about expensive roof failures and parking brake issues that stem from batteries that have degraded yet still pass the test we all judge by in terms of starting the car. Based on what you've said I'd get a new battery now even if a bit of charging makes the old one look servicable. I found Tayna to be the best place to get a new one and whilst i was able to handle the registration myself it occurs to me that Ross/Bowser/RBM might do that for you at your upcoming visit...shouldn't cost a lot as takes only a few minutes.
