Thinking of moving up from 2.0 sport to ZMr

I have had my lovely Z4 2.0 sport now for 12 months and am hooked on the zed, so having noted that my car seems to be keeping it's price at various dealers I think it's time to play with the big lads so am looking to change to a good old ZMR.

My car is an 08 so don't want anything much older, having scoured various sites there seems to be some decent ones out there.

My only worry is the huge increase in running costs between the two, I only do around 60 miles per week and am getting close to 50 so insurance wouldn't be to bad.

What is your opinion please before I jump.

Meh, just go for it :)

At only 60 weeks, it's maybe a tenner in fuel? Servicing is the bigger cost, but won't come around often at that mileage....

Well, running costs:- 23 MPG mixed driving, £400 plus road tax, superunleaded fuel, £350+ a year more to extend warranty than on a standard Zed, and budget £600/£800 every four years for inspection 1/2, and £250 for standard oil changes between every two years. I'm basing that on you doing 5,000 or so miles a year.

I moved from a Z4 2.5 sport. That was a very good car indeed but even after three years of ownership the 'M' is still just totally absorbing to drive and an event every time I get in it. If the extra costs don't worry you too much go for it, you won't regret it

I have to do 12k miles a year. This was why I ruled out Z4M/M5/M6 before I changed my car (at least £100 extra a month just on fuel). BMW Insured Warranty will be over £1k per annum.

I pay £56 per month for a comprehensive BMW warranty with a £250 excess. Had it a year now and not had to use it (touch wood). My inspection 1in two weeks will cost £575 from Batemans BMW in the Lake District. There are some dealerships that price servicing on 'M's very competitively. It's just a question of planning accordingly! I'm having a couple of days in the Lakes and will get the car serviced while I'm there :)

In three years and 23,000 miles of ownership the car has been reliable, (one fault with a sensor that brought all the warning lights on and a faulty sat nav screen both fixed under warranty) has cost me nothing so far on consumables- but tyres are now due for the rears and I drive it hard so it's no garage queen.

I'd avoid a really low mileage car if I were you, sitting around in dealerships and garages doesn't seem to suit these cars! Find one that's been used regularly and cherished by it's owner, you'll love it.

Straight-six engine in Z4M and manual gearbox are far more reliable than those in M5/M6. So the costs of warranty and servicing are not too bad.

Do it. I have had mine a year now and there are a few things i do not like about it, hard suspension, the damn cdv valve (though i do use it as my everyday summer car), but when you hit that throttle just right and it takes off it still makes me smile and the noise it makes with the roof down

Ok it costs more to run, (i pay similar to what Sammy posted, but i went for the no excess - £850 a year and use the AA for my recovery as it is cheaper as i have several cars) The M tends to be a car you keep for a few years so over that period you are no talking massive amounts more - oh that i what i tell myself

Go and try one, but be warned you might fall in love with it.

Thanks for the opinions but still undecided. I will check the web based on the advice and then consider a test drive, but I know what that will lead to.

This bit scares me though, £400 plus road tax, as these type of cars are seen as demons from hell by certain politicians.

Change of government remember ;)

Remember when Boris Johnson came in? The £25 guzzler duty for London was scrapped straight away.

Dont testdrive until u r sure u want to buy it coz once u test drive unless u r not a petrolhead u wont buy anything else. good luck thats waht happened with me. test drove it and that was it. I went from 2.5 to M. good luck mate.

test drive???!!! I would advise you not to fire that engine up becos its exactly how they had me by hook. i put my deposit down without even test driving the car at a main dealer.

in fact, don't even go see the car cos its too dangerous.

tell you what mate, i have not looked back since! :)

That's it I need to find one, however it seems difficult as I would prefer a dealer and get best trade in for mine, doesn't seem many in north west England :(

Test drive one, the costs are not that much of a big deal on the mileage you will be doing.
£400.00 per year on tax is srtong, but it is only once a year. :D

They are seriously adictive, I have taken a two hour detour on a 30 minute journey several times, just to listen to that noise and have the roof down. It is special. As Sammyz said "it's an event" you will not be dissapointed.
