Thinking of moving from an M135i to an e89

Hi, as the title says i currently have an m135i which i am considering trading in for an e89. I'd much prefer one of the 6 cylinder engine models but i think price wise im going to have to stick to the 20i or 28i.

I'm going to try to get an extended test drive but can anyone tell me what the 2l sounds like? obviously its not going to sound as good as the straight 6 but ill definitely miss the pops and bangs my 1 series gives off, will it do something similar? Youtube doesnt seem to reflect the true sound of a car!

Also, whats the manual box like in the e89? i had a z4 coupe and the manual box was ok but nowhere near as nice as say my older s2000. How does the e89 one compare? My box is currently an auto wich i dont mind moving to but for the price increase over the manual i can get lots of extras.

Lastly, as the sales figures for the e89 are quite low does that mean there will be much room for a good discount? Im looking new only because of the cheaper PCP %APR vs used and im set on valencia orange (which i know many people dont seem to like!)

Valencia is a great colour....rest assured. Be quick on the purchase though, as discounts will dismiss after May....

Driven both 2 and 2.8......I personally don't think too much between them sound wise....

My 28 pops and bangs like a maddun, especially changing up from around 4k revs and very noticeable with the roof down, I love it. I think the 4 cyl engine sound is underrated personally. I have never tried the 6 cyl though.

Do try the manual and auto yourself as everyone has their own opinion. I've not driven a manual bmw I thought was any good (not by change and juddery clutches!) but the 8 speed auto is sublime.

I got a good £7k off for cash without trying too hard, I'm pretty sure I could have squeezed a few hundred more but I don't like to push too hard as it takes too much money from the uk end of the process, sounds silly I know, but I was happy with my deal.

thats good to know as i was worried the 2l would have been toned down somewhat. not a bad discount either! I was going to enquire about one the first week of april as thats when the new discounts will be out. I have the same 8 speed auto in my current car and it is brilliant! not sure if ive become too lazy for a manual though!

I wouldn't go for a 20i from a m135i. You will miss the power.

The M135i is great to drive and I had lots of fun test driving it.

Go for a 28i or a 35i :o

I love my Valencia Orange, it looks great and, changes colour too depending on the time of day.
Looks really good when the Sun is going down, like it's on fire :)

The sound, listen to this 1.8 (2.0)

I am really impressed with the way that sounds  I wasn't expecting that and that is more vocal than my V8 M3 ever was it beggars belief.

actually that sounds just like my m135i! i assume it is the same that when youre in comfort mode it doesnt do it at all but in sport mode it acts just like in the video

i agree the 20i will be a big step down from what im used to but im trying to weigh up the looks and having a convertible vs performance and practicality of my current 1. the cost of the 28i from new with all the extras i want will probably tip me over my price range.

Go with the 28i, it's a lot of fun if you put your foot down. But if you use cruise control on the motorway you can get 40mpg+. Last weekend I went from the start of the M58 near Southport to my house on A3 near Wimbledon (220 miles) and got 39.6mpg.

As for noise, when you test drive (start with the roof down) then put it in drive, and knock gear stick to left (sport mode) then press the sport button. Then (providing there is safe distance etc) floor it. When it changes up it will make this very nice gurgle burp burp burp noise on the over run between gears. Makes me smile every time. I have no idea how the manual one sounds though.

Worth noting that in the 2l engines there is an active sound design unit that "enhances" the engine noise over the audio system. Here's the part on real oemhttp://realoem.com/bmw/partxref.do?part=65129286863&showus=&showeur=1&series=E89 and here's some info I found on it http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rc...toDIBA&usg=AFQjCNFSrZ-hP4QLmnummI5t8vTkWjIOTg when I finally get round to replacing amps and speakers in mine, I may take this out then again I may not......

I would have liked the 28i but the price difference was just too much.

I went for the 20i in Valencia Orange and paid extra for the black roof so the car is now classed as an 'Individual Order'.

Don't be so sure, I get a very highly specified 28i this time last year and got £8.5k off list paying cash and similar discounts could be had on pcp as well.

Unless you have a second roomy car and specifically want to feel the rays on your head then I think you will miss the practicality and convenience of a hatch more than the performance so puzzled why you would want to change.

The gearboxes are fine and no different in feel to the F20.

Re engine only you can decide, they all offer decent performance whichever you go for. The 2.0 is no slouch and more than capable but as I said I think you will miss the practicality. Personally I would stick with the 1er , it's a great car in M135I guise and a better alrounder.

Ahh yes the m135 also has the sound generator thing in it, cant tell the sound is fake, it jus adds a bit of bass to the engine note, i quite like but i assume its on there to assist with the noise that gets removed when you add a turbo to an engine.

Brilliant, thanks for giving me an idea of how much discount you managed to get, gives me an idea of what i should be able to achieve with the dealers.

Ill be honest and say looks are quite a large contributing factor, comparing a 3 door 1 series to an orange z4 the z4 looks a million times better and less common! you can spec a 116d to look nearly the same as the m135i. I know what you mean regarding a second car, ive had a few 2 seater cars though which ive managed to live with, and my girlfriend will be driving soon so she can have a boring car to go fetch the shopping in!

^^
looks are what do it for me too when it comes to the z4, nothing comes near it for the price lookswise

performance and soundwise, it can be a bit lacking but on the daily pootle around town it is fine. i just stick it in sport for a bit of extra umph when moving off but other than that, it is fine. its not loud at all even at full throttle but i guess for people who want that, then they could go the aftermarket exhaust route

practicality is not great but i have managed with it for the last 2 years just fine and when i need more seats, friends are on hand to help out so no worries there

come summer time, you will love every minute of it and take it everywhere

at work, everyone will know you as the person with the flash car lol

I was thinking with a 28i if it was too slow for me then a remap could always help out a good bit. And to be honest I dont really use all the performance in the 1 series as i should. I never ever thought id say it but its made me think that a car can be too fast! poor thing rarely goes over 5k revs

That's unfair. I would have said more like a bunch of skeletons having a disco in a biscuit tin.. (just kidding!)
