Not the same engine but I was watching an old topgear episode with the 130 against an R32.
Clarkson said at the end for all the use the rear seats were in the 130 you would be better off with a Z4.

:D

I've also had a 123d (auto) in the past. Very quick and a fun drive, and economical compared to your Z, but if you only do 7000 miles a year it won't make a massive difference to your wallet. If you do go for a 123td, make sure it's the coupe - the hatchback version is pig-ugly. I also had a couple of 330Ds - six cylinders of course, and a great engine, smoother and more powerful than the 4-pot engines. I currently have a 530d, and average over 40mpg, nearer 50 on a run.

But none of these have the handling or fun factor of the Z4, and you can't take the roof down. Go for the 123d for added practicality, but not for overall driving enjoyment.

Had my Z4 3.0i for about 4 years now, I still love it. But I’ve been getting the itch to move to something new and potentially more economical.

I’m in no hurry to sell but being a convertible this might be a good time, do you really get a better price in spring?

My car has been very reliable but some wear and tear items have lead to some big MOT bills recently, brake lines and new suspension aren’t cheap!

I’m a big fan of the 123d quick little car that’ll do great mpg, although I only do 7000 miles a year I could potentially half my fuel and tax bills.

I’ve seen people do the opposite go from 123d to z4 and never look back....

Another option would be 120d with a remap I’ve read the 123d really short gears can be annoying

In an ideal world I’d sell mine and find a 123d for a similar price. My car is a 2004 3.0i manual (the one to have imo) with 65,000 miles the clock miles on the clock probably worth about £5500

Pros:

Newer car
Much better mpg
Cheaper tax and insurance
Diesel torque, quite quick in the real world
Potentially better looking

Cons:

Selling can take months
123d’s are pretty rare, might take a while to find one I like
Unlikely to have any in my area
Lose that incredible engine
Lose the soft top
Going from probably one of the most reliable bmw engines to one of the lease reliabile (timing chain issues, my Mini Cooper S chain snapped it’s not fun)

Also looking at other smaller quick diesel cars 320d coupe or Alfa guilietta could be options, small quick diesels in my budget are few and far between

What do you guys think? At the moment I’m thinking about advertising mine for sale and would be willing to wait ages until the right buyer came along

Why are you fixated on a diesel OP?

They’re only good for motorway miles imo.

Why bother with all that cam-chain nonsense!

In March I bought an E90 330i with the same N52 engine as my Z4 Coupe - works for me!

Suppose I’m drawn in by the great mpg and torque, I can also get free diesel (won’t say much more about that haha)

The 1 series forum also mentioned future classic, I don’t think a 3.0i is rare enough for that but as more and more cars go, automatic, turbo, awd etc I do think there will be more desire for rwd, manual, na sports cars

So it will depreciate much slower than a diesel which is probably going to start getting taxed much more

Now that’s a good looking 1 series!!!
Nope still fugly! poorly proportioned design. The lotus europa was nicknamed the "Breadvan" I think the 1 series is its fugly offspring. Just don't start me on the interior thats even worse! :poke:
