Thinking of changing my Saab for a Z4 ... will I regret it?

Wow, thanks for all the nice comments.

As someone else said, the Saab is like a nice pair of slippers, and whilst I like slippers, I don't need them (this analogy is not going to hold up to much more use). I don't have kids, I rarely have anyone in the back of the Saab and the wife's got a sensible car. Add to that I've got a 20mile commute which is 3miles urban (stop and start) and 17miles of national speed limit (A & B roads) and the fact the Saab costs about the same as a Z4 in VED and fuel; I feel like I can have more fun for the same money.

I don't need to buy a new car but I'm 33 so if I wait much longer it'll become a midlife crisis!

I'm slightly worried about winter in a rear wheel drive car, if it snows, as a good 7 of those miles rarely get any gritting ... but other people with BMW's make it to work so why shouldn't I :) ... if you buy winter tyres, do BMW store the other set for you? Also, is the hardtop worthwhile?

The testdrive blew me away it was exactly what I was looking for (and didn't get from the SLK); the sound of the engine is just wonderful (2.5si). I had a look/sit in a coupe today and whilst it was really nice (and technically more practical) it wouldn't feel right having a car like the Z4 and not being able to have the top down.

A final question; will I look out of place in a Z4 with a pipe.

Wintr tyres and you'll be just fine. Given the idiots on the road if you can half drive it's not a problem, although you can get stuck on perfectly flat susrfaces if you don't have Winte tyres.

Hardtop is an excellent extra, but not required as the Zed has a multiple layered insulated and waterproff roof. If oyu park outside it of course protects from the elements. Pick one up anytime for £900 to £1000 and add in £200 if it needs respraying your colour.

Test a good few Zeds as there are so many engine and interior, gearbox, seat combos to consider.

Pipes are no good in the Zed as the wind would blow ash in your face.....

33 years old and talking about pipes?? What are YOU smoking?

There's a few UK users on here who opted for winter tyres. After spending winter 2009-10 on summer rubber I decided they were a sensible idea and bought wheels/tyres during last summer. Lucky that I did given December's weather. They really are remarkable compared to summer rubber - search for a winter tyre video by pawnsacrifice, amazing stuff. I went with cheap Kumho KW27s that have been great (£62/tyre in 225/50/16 although were up at £115/tyre during the height of winter). The only issue is deep snow: the Z4 has limited ground clearance and that stopped me using it where my van, also on winters, was fine.
