Thinking of buying a Cayman

Hi guys im thinking of buying a used Cayman (2006-2007), and wondered if anyone on here has any experience with them...should i go for a 2.9 or an "S"? Anything i should look out for? what are the desirable extras i should go for...........

Ive driven both on extended 2 day tests curtesy of Porsche. Both are good .Which one will depend on how you drive.I liked the 2.9 but I dont drive to the limit.I bought the coupe in the end because I was worried about costs. They are expensive to maintain and at the time I was doing alot of miles,a killer for retained value.Leather is worth the extra and reversing aids as its difficult to see out the back.Full service history is essential. The interior looks good with the fitted sat nav.You will find very few are basic cars. All have some extras.I think it looks good in Black or red.I dont like it in silver but colour is up to the individual.Good luck in your search.Im looking forward to testing the new one next year, but it will probably by too expensive new.

I think id like the 3.4...but as iv never driven any atall...im just going by reviews etc

If performance is your game (as it is for me) then the bigger engine is the way to go, the 2.9, IMHO, simply isn't a truly quick enough car to be considered sporty or keep up with some modern diesels. I've driven both and thought the 2.9 slow. Its all relative of course.

True if you're comparing it to an Audi R18 or the like :poke: , but with pdk the 'basic' still has plenty of go for a road car. Bro has touch sensitive Nav on his, and that's a nice toy. (Saying all that he'd go for an S next time too!)

I drove a 2.9 boxster before I got the zed 23i, its was alot faster than the Zed, but in the end was too much money for a car that was been replaced soon....

I never drove the S version

Just to put matters correct it would be a 2.7 you would be looking at.The 2.9 came out in late 2008/9. I dont think it makes alot of difference to performance but can always compare figures .

Well the 3.4s is comparable to the M , so for me it would always been the larger engine version. When I looked at Caymans I would not even consider looking at the Ad unless it was a 3.4 I would say is much more desirable. Caymans are not that much to run either less than the m form the service intervals and what Porsche quoted me. Overall there a smooth process and 0.1 sec quicker 100 than an M form what I read on a recent article overall the balance is much superior to the Z4.

From my research a Cayman S under 60k miles full history and decent spec will set you back around 17k. There will be an element of depreciation with the new model coming but doubt it will be massive no worse than you would expect. I found a stunning S the other day with 40k on the clock for 17k a must if you ask me is the switchable sports exhaust! :D

If you like power forget the 2.7 there is a reason why they had a revised version on the Gen 2 up to the 2.9, if you like to tick by never got to the limit your be quite content with the 2.7 am sure, still a great car.

Iv decided on a 3.4 and prob with sat nav. Im bugeting about 18k so there should be plenty of choice...might even keep my Z for sunny days.

So gutted people can afford these cars elsewhere... to insure the 3.4 here in Manchester is over £2500 a year... which if you have the money is affordable but still a rip off.

The Cayman is great car without doubt but in my eyes the new Boxster ticks every box  Just got to wait till the prices are in my range. :(

:o , my M fully comp is only 600 and am 28

Without turning it into an insurance thread, I would be very tempted by that one, just not in a postion to proceed :(

Can't comment on the Cayman, but one of my mates has owned 987-model Boxsters in both 2.9 and 3.4 flavours. I wouldn't have said that the 2.9 was a world away performance-wise to my 3.0 Z4. The 3.4 was a whole different ball-game...

I would take a vw boxster over my zed any day. Shame but I have had problems with my z4 from day one, bmw in my opinion hav'nt even got the basics right. :(
