thinking of a return....

Hi guy's not been around much the last few months, this tends to happen when you move on with your car i suppose though i do keep having a look at whats going on.
you may recall i bought a Mk5 golf GTI after killing my Z, ive had it since first week of december, had it remapped in the new year and it's running 257bhp according to the rolling road it had the week after. its a very quick car, i would go as far as to say it's quicker than the 3.0 Z i had without question, it has the DSG gearbox and overall it's a dam good car, very clinical, very competant at everthing it does and thats where the problems start....it aint got a soul, it's a bit too characterless and uninvolving to own, i haven't cleaned it for a week and i never look back at it when i walk away, the upshot is i miss my BMW terribly and feel i will have to scratch the itch once more. i have half heartedly advertised the GTI on pistonheads and think that may well develop into a full blown effort by the end of the month.

So what will i do....not sure yet apart from the fact it will ahve to be BMW, a return to the Z4 is a big possible but i have to admit to having a mighty itch for an E46 M3, time will tell for sure i won't lose money on the GTI as i bought it well so watch this space....

On another little note i notice that you still trying to sell your car Tedster, fancy a Golf GTI DSG ???... :driving:

I love the feeling I get whenever I look back at my ride. I think she looks hot ALL the time. Even when it has mud stains on it.

Sounds interesting, although I think you'd need to go for a 3.0Si or something, just getting another 3.0 again might be underwhelming after a few weeks.

I thought you had walked away from the Zed all to easily for someone who was clearly passionate about it while an owner.

Interestingly I was 'playing' with a new '58 plate GTi on Friday back from Oulton Park, with a guy determined to demo it's performance and the Zed could out accelerate it every single time coming out of a long series of dual carriageway islands from 30 to well let's say 70  Granted it was quick for a 2 box saloon but a bit well - bland.

Hi Plowy

Welcome back, I do know what you mean the Zed does have character, never driven a GTI so cant comment on that, but I guess if you werent seriously considering changing back, you wouldnt have posted this thread :D

Good luck whatever you decide

Totally agree with all that Phil and to be honest i thought that the missing performance might have been the key to me settling with this car but i have to say that since i have had it remapped it has made me realise that performance is not what its all about and there was more than that missing, its an intangible thing, the remap has made the car very aggressive, it has taken it from 200bhp to 257bhp and totally transformed it, the mid range pull is tremendous but as ive said its not just about this there's just no passion, as my mates keep telling me "it's just another good VW" and there's no soul in it...

Tend to hear this a lot from people who leave the brand. Doesnt take long for them to return.

Plowy, M3 CS (the one with the quicker sterring rack! No not the CSL, the CS) run out model! Good choice!

There is definately something about a Z4 that gets under your skin. I have a buddy with an M3 who did not understand why I would by a Z4 when an M3 is clearly a better performing car. For me, it's all about the overall experinece and IMHO, the Z4 wins this hands down (but a 2008 V8 M3 might be awful tempting in a few years :driving: ).

Speed and competence are nothing without character and soul to a car.

Infact, sometimes adding speed/performance without adding soul or character can just make a car worse in my view, because you just end up spending more on fuel/tyres and driving faster and having no more real fun...

MZ4 or Alpina maybe, to add oodles more to the character factor when coming back... :D

Not good to hear, but just what everyone else is saying: a car needs to have soul. My Ibiza fell into the same category of being bloody quick and with reasonable handling, but the Z4 is so much more entertaining even though I don't yet have the confidence to drive it as hard (yet). I'd guess at the moment I'm still quicker A-B driving my Ibiza than I would be in my Z4...

Hoped I wasn't too close to the mark when I said this in an earlier thread about your car:

I have to admit I wasn't a great fan of the DSG when I tried it - admittedly it was attached to a VW Passat TDI estate hire car, but I just found it a bit dull although the car probably didn't help. Some piece of engineering though, I appreciate it for that.

I know exactly what you mean a11y - I definitley feel like I've stepped up a notch... until I had to scratch the 20 year Land Rover itch recently, I've always had quick cars but all hot hatches... 205GTi, MkII golf GTi, Renaultsport Clio 172 each of which I had for five years and drove them all like I'd stole 'em...

But there's something different about the Z4; it makes me feel very grown up (OK, I'm nearly 40 and already had all the mid-life crisis jokes thanks very much) whilst scaring the pants off me at every opportunity..!

I think I can sum it up in one sentence: "It's a proper sports car"..!

I'm not surpised the Golf felt like a step down in terms of driving fun, I'd still love to try one someday though.

Plenty of M3's around for you to look at, before you settle on another Z4 :P I wonder what mods you'll do to this one... or will you go for an Alpina or Z4M that doesn't need so many tweaks
