Been watching this as im looking for a DSLR too. I like the sound of the deal you got so could you PM me the details and i might invest.

Also whats peoples thought to the Canon EOS 1000D 10.1mp Digital Camera?

Paul - amazing how quick you go from novice to expert in a narrow field and I'm now entering Mastermind with specialist subject of 'Canon DSLR's £400 to £500'

Firstly the advise I received was that the 1000d although only having 10.2 mp is hardly a factor, the biggest difference is that it's shipped without an image stabilising lens, which for the extra few £'s makes it not worth the compromise. Same story from 2 dealers.

Prices - sure Canon and pretty much everyone in the lower DSLR have got into a manufacturer rebate cycle. Ballpark at all the majors for Canon is £499 payable on the day and £30 back in the post. Biggest downside of them is you get the camera, lens and a cardboard box. For the likes of me I have to add £100 onto that for kit, such as filters to protect the lens, bag, chip, strap, etc. etc.

Second hand for me went out the window as Ebay gets bid up to around £430 and with all the associated risks it seems silly and Mrs CJ shoulder surfed me and said chastised me about second hand, no warranties, etc.

The internet is full of refurbished, but in the end I decided again the margin over new was not wide enough to justify.

So I ended up selecting an HK supplier, with accessories that matched my needs, 2 year warranty, free shipping, etc.
I'll PM some links, but don't take anything as an endorsement as I may yet be an unhappy punter...

Not here yet. Was not expecting it to be given the 3 to 5 business days then UK customs and then local delivery. Will post as soon as here

Interesting thread....I just bought a Sony A330 with some cool accessories and a Tamron 70-300 additional lens. Spent a lot of time looking but felt the Sony was the best value for my money. It seems they're trying to crack into the DSLR market by offering great features at a strong price. A D900 or similar with the same kit would have been £200 more and as it's very much a learner's first DSLR, i thought that was too much extra.

Got a course booked starting January so i expect to be professional by March!

I thought I'd already posted a response here , but must have failed to actually post it....

The camera arrived a week ago and I have to say it's very impressive. Service from the HK seller was excellent and it was sent as a low value gift so that made it even better
Lot's of accessories so when you combine those being free, the price £40 less than best UK and a 2 year Vs 1 year warranty and it all stacked up.

I have some great shots of the floor, wall and feet so far and have to learn.

Do you guys reckon I should get a filter just to cover/protect the end of the lens?

Then when I stop travelling I'll get out and take some poor shots

Its definitely worth getting a decent UV filter Phil, thats all you really need to protect it. Look for something like a Hoya Skylight (1B).

And while you are shopping for filters, find a decent polarising filter.....you can rotate it in its housing to deal with directional light and it does things like deepening blue skies and removing glare from water, polished surfaces etc....very useful.

Those would be the maino nes, but filters is a whole new world of fun......!

And of course, the joy of a DSLR is you can take as many pics as you like and dump the crappy ones without anyone knowing! LOL

if you try colour filters its amazing how they can enhance pics such as sunsets etc.they can be also used for all sorts of cool effects 8)this was taken with my mobile phone using a very pale blue filter(i was messing around to see what the result would be :lol: )

Yep - I have that one too. 4 times per week to run a few miles and pick up some weights, for which they charge me £50 per month for the dubious pleasure of it.

I've been using a D90 since it came out and love it. I had a D40 and though it was a great value for the money, I found I wanted a little more out of the camera.
